ATI Department for newborns at the Hospital “Marie Curie” from Bucharest temporarily reduces the capacity by five beds, after the departure of seven nurses. The head of the department, Dr. Cătălin Cîrstoveanu, warns that the lack of staff endangers the care of seriously ill babies.
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the “Marie Curie” Hospital in Bucharest is going through one of the most difficult periods in its existence. Due to the shortage of staff, caused by the departure of seven nurses whose positions could not be filled, the department’s management requested the Directorate of Public Health (DSP) to temporarily reduce the number of beds, from 27 to 22.
The head of the department, Dr. Cătălin Cîrstoveanu, says that the measure is necessary to avoid overloading the remaining staff and not to endanger the lives of hospitalized children.
“Now, with 7 nurses leaving, we are in a situation where we have to close and we have made a request to DSP, to temporarily remove 5 places from the structure of the department so that we can cope and not put the lives of other patients at risk, it is very clear”the doctor told News.ro.
One nurse can take care of up to five patients
According to Cîrstoveanu, the rules regarding the ratio between nurses and patients can no longer be respected, given that vacant positions are not filled, and maternity leaves or departures from the system further reduce the available staff.
“Things are subject to the law, any person who leaves will obviously not have another person to take their place, whether it is a doctor, a nurse or a nurse. As such, a nurse leaves, the place is not filled. If you go on maternity leave, the place is not filled”he explained.
The doctor points out that in an ATI level III B ward, where critically ill newborns are treated, including patients connected to ECMO or undergoing heart surgery, the law requires a ratio of one nurse to two patients.
“We have a nurse at 3, 4, 5, when they are on vacation”stated Cîrstoveanu.
Dozens of babies are waiting for a place in intensive care
The reduction of the department’s capacity comes in an already critical context. to “Marie Curie” the worst cases of newborns in the whole country arrive, and according to the doctor, there is almost always a waiting list.
“I think we only have a few days a year where we see 2-3 requests on the list, but mostly it’s 10+ requests, always”he said.
Typically, between 10 and 30 babies await transfer to the neonatal intensive care unit, and lack of space can have dramatic consequences.
Cîrstoveanu recalls that the need to expand the capacity was also at the basis of the project financed by PNRR.
“Romania doesn’t have places to take care of its children, that’s about it, we had 150 children on the list who died waiting for a place to be hospitalized in other wards”said the doctor.
