The first vice-president of PSD Victor Negrescu states that he categorically rejects a possible government with the AUR and that he still supports a “hard line” regarding the isolation of the formation. In an intervention at Digi24, he also spoke about the mistakes made by the social democrats in the presidential campaigns and about the party’s prospects in case of early elections.
“I personally strongly reject any kind of government with GOLD. I, personally, do not accept such a government with AUR for many reasons that do not concern PSD’s interests, which concern Romania’s interests“, declared Victor Negrescu.
The first vice-president of the PSD stated that he is “the partisan of a hard line in what it means to isolate the AUR” and that he intends to maintain this position.
Negrescu claims that a possible entry of the AUR into the government could have consequences on Romania’s relationship with the European Union and on European funds.
“For me, AUR in governance means this: the Hungarian model, the blocking of European funds, less investment in our country, it means anti-democratic decisions, decisions against freedom of expression, it means a method of governance and a government action that goes against my beliefs“, he declared.
“I don’t understand how anyone, either from the PSD or from the area of right-wing formations, allows these political people to say: put a little GOLD in the government! Well, don’t we have to look at the past? When the extremists came to power what did they do in their states, what was the method by which they imposed their will?“, added Negrescu.
Asked about the social democrats who accompanied the Prime Minister-designate Adrian Veștea to the AUR headquarters before the Parliament vote in which the Government proposed by him was not sworn in, Negrescu said that the subject was not discussed in the PSD leadership.
“These aspects were not discussed within the PSD leadership. I was not consulted, there was no broad consultation on this subject“, he stated.
Negrescu: PSD focused too much on “the man” in the presidential campaigns
The PSD first vice-president also spoke about the party’s results in the presidential elections, considering that one of the social democrats’ mistakes was excessive focus on the candidate, to the detriment of the party’s values and ideas.
“I think we made a mistake here, in many presidential campaigns we focused a lot on the man, or, in this logic, we forgot what defines us, why you want to govern, why you want to lead, why you want power. Here we have to learn to explain better and, in this context, we will probably also have a president with social democratic values“, declared Negrescu.
Regarding the possibility of early elections, he believes that the PSD could achieve a result similar to the one recorded in the previous parliamentary elections, if it has a well-constructed campaign.
“I don’t want to come up with percentages, but I think that there are still a lot of Romanians who support PSD and I think that in a well-thought-out electoral campaign we can have the same score as the one we had in the previous parliamentary elections“, said Victor Negrescu.
