UPDATE
The spokesperson of the University of Bucharest, Bogdan Oprea, stated that the administrator of Dormitory C in the Grozăvesti Complex in Bucharest checked the room where a student was staying who reported that she had been bitten by insects and did not find any insects in room space or outside it, according to Agerpres.
The clarifications of the University of Bucharest come as a result of a situation that was reported in one of the rooms of Dormitory C in the Grozăvesti Complex in Bucharest and picked up by the press.
“A student staying in Dormitory C in the Grozăvesti Complex in Bucharest reported on Thursday, October 3, 2024, to the dormitory administration that she had been bitten by insects. The dormitory administrator, accompanied by the head of the dormitory, a representative student who is housed in the same building, moved to the room for checks. As a result, no insects were found anywhere in the room. Checks were repeated on Saturday, but also on Sunday morning. We mention that the furniture in the entire dormitory (bed , desk, chairs, bookcase, wardrobe, shelf, lighting fixtures) is new, it was completely replaced in September 2024. Also, before the replacement, all the rooms in this building were sanitized and painted”Bogdan Oprea said in a press release.
He specified that the disinsection actions, in accordance with the legislation and regulations in force, are carried out once every 90 days, and the last two disinsection actions, precisely for the preparation of the new academic year and the arrival of students, were carried out even more often ( to 54 days), on July 31, 2024 and September 23, 2024, respectively.
“The University of Bucharest has signed a new disinsection contract starting on October 1, 2024, and the following actions will be scheduled until the end of the year every month. The management of the Directorate of Dormitories – Canteens and Student Activities of the UB has already contacted the contracted company in order to schedule a disinsection action in Dormitory C of the Grozăvesti Complex on Monday, October 7, 2024. The Management of the Dormitories – Canteens and Student Activities Department of the UB asks students to strictly respect the hygiene conditions in the individual and common spaces of the dormitories, including by checking in advance the objects, products and luggage they bring to the dormitories, and, at the same time, to keep the furniture and appliances provided by the University of Bucharest in good condition“, Bogdan Oprea also mentions.
Initial news
Octavian Berceanu, the former head of the Environmental Guard, published images and medical documents of a directing student who came to the doctor with bed bug bites. Berceanu also criticizes Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, accusing corruption and poor conditions in the dormitories.
“Marcel Ciolacu, do you think that the students devoured by bedbugs and corruption, on the first night of the dormitory, are still proud to be Romanians?
Together with Ale, a first-year Biology student, staying in Regie, dormitory C, on the 2nd floor, I went to the Guard Room of the Matei Balș hospital. She was all bitten by bedbugs.
The administration of dormitory C, the administrator told him that she came with the insects from home. That they can handle it, that the mattress is brand new, although it is clear that it is at least a year old. The administration said that it was their business, that they are unwashed and come from the countryside with bed bugs in their wounds”Octavian Berceanu wrote on Facebook.
He accused the administration of telling the girls “that they stink, that they don’t wake up at 6.00 in the morning to take a shower”while the 40 girls on the floor are offered only 4 showers, of which only 2 work.
“The girls who come to college are accommodated in a specific prison environment. Being a student in the dormitories does not give rise to a feeling of pride, but of hatred, humiliation and helplessness. I say try a week in the dorm, among bedbugs and without showers and then think about whether it’s worth being the first person in the state if you can’t change a simple thing, defining for civilization, the accommodation condition of the students, Mr. Head of the Government of Romania”Berceanu also wrote.
He argued that such things should not be ignored and that the family of the girl who arrived at the hospital urged her to “to talk about what’s going on, about corruption and incompetence in the administration of the hostels“.
“Mr. Prime Minister, I have experience in the management of a private company, of the state administration and I can tell you that in such cases the administration should have been dismissed immediately, as a message of intolerance for the things that make us ashamed to be Romanians .
As for the students, I hope that your message (of Marcel Ciolacu – no) urges them to take a stand and not let their indifference and myoritic resignation destroy their future. Until she spent her first night as a student, in the dormitory, Ale still believed in Romania”the former head of the Environmental Guard conveyed to Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu.
