The operation, performed at the Recovery Hospital in Iași, was a complex one and involved replacing the knees of the knees with prostheses, a difficult procedure due to the previous problems of the patient and other serious diseases that he had, reports the newspaper of Iași.
According to doctors, the woman had a complicated medical past, including breast cancer and chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments.
Professor Dr. Paul Sârbu, orthopedic primary physician and head of the Orthopedics Clinic at the Iași Clinical Hospital, explained that in the case of knee osteoarthritis, the most common deformation, encountered in about 80-85% of cases, is the so-called “Genu Varum”that is, the orientation of the knees to the outside.
“Deformation of this type can be caused by correctly untreated trauma, sprains or neglected fractures, but also overweight or obesity, an increasingly serious medical problem, frequently underestimated and insufficiently treated, not only in Romania, but at a global level. Sometimes, genetic factors can contribute to these conditions”said the doctor.
The teacher points out that in Romania it is frequently reached for forms of deformation so advanced that its colleagues from countries such as Germany or France meet such cases only in rare situations or among patients from other areas.
“As a rule, such patients should be operated on earlier before deformations become very severe. However, many postpone the surgery from fear and choose alternative treatment methods, which can give temporary results. When the pain becomes unbearable, they reach advanced stages, difficult to treat. In these cases, the simple implantation is not enough, The knee, which requires extremely precise intervention ”added it.
He also said that more and more patients with severe deformations of the knees arrive at the Recovery Hospital in Iasi. The interventions require advanced techniques and a lot of experience.
“An example is a patient who had two different types of deformations: the left knee was curved outwards, and the right one inward, a rare combination, which causes a serious functional handicap. The woman suffers from obesity, which complicates the situation even more.said the doctor.
According to him, for such cases, special prostheses are needed, more expensive and more complex than the usual ones, some being of a revision type, ie prostheses used in repeated operations or in difficult situations.
“In the case of this patient, the result was very good, and she feels good and is to be discharged. In a few months she will return for the operation to the other knee.”said the doctor.
