The delivery company presented on Tuesday an autonomous delivery robot, called DOT, which he described as the first robot capable of traveling on bicycle tracks, roads and sidewalks, as well as the first specially built for local trade, reports CBS News.

The company has promoted DOT as a more efficient and economical way to deliver small orders, such as toilet products, for example, which does not require a transport vehicle.

“You do not always need a normal size car to deliver a tube of toothpaste or a pack of diapers. This is the idea behind Dot.”said Stanley Tang, co-founder and head of Doordash Labs, the company’s robotic solutions division, in a statement.

“Innovation not only consisted of doing it autonomous, but in it reliable and efficient to meet the needs of local business and consumers.”he added.

Fast deliveries with the help of artificial intelligence

DOT can travel up to 20 miles per hour, providing fast food deliveries. It is also smart enough and agile to browse the doors and car alleys, the company said. It has a height of about a meter and a half and can carry up to 30 pounds (about 13.6 kg) of products.

Doordash said that his platform “Autonomous Delivery Platform”based on artificial intelligence, decides which commands are most suitable for DOT delivery, based on the delivery location and other factors.

“Whether it’s a dasher, a road dot, a drone in the air or a sidewalk, the platform orchestrates these decisions in real time to optimize our entire global network.”the company said.

The mayor of Mesa, Mark Freeman, highlighted the partnership as one who positions the suburb of Phoenix at the forefront of the future local deliveries.

“The fact that we see these autonomous delivery robots on the streets in Mesa demonstrate how these advanced technologies can respond to daily needs, while strengthening the local business in our community.”he said in a statement.
