It has not been long since the inauguration of modern artesians, with light games and symphonies, until the increasing expenses allocated to their functioning and the condition of these constructions began to worry about communities.

High maintenance costs, frequent technical problems, water waste, precarious cleanliness, vandalism, bathing in the summer wells or their mismatch in the urban decor have generated the dissatisfaction of many locals. The repairs of some wells cost hundreds of thousands of euros from local budgets and encountered difficulties, while others, such as the one in Deva, were left in a state of degradation.

The artesian fountain in the center of Deva municipality (video) occupies an area of 400 square meters and was inaugurated in 2012, before local elections. The music artesian was included in a project to modernize Victoria Market in Deva, estimated at over 2.5 million euros and financed from European funds.

The authorities promised musical shows and impressive water jets, over eight meters high, and the fountain became the point of attraction of summer in Deva.

In the coming years, however, it began to degrade and was stopped several times for repairs. In 2025, it was not started, and the state in which it reached the locals. Artesian now resembles an artificial, green lake, in which the water poured over the rows of nozzles and non -functional metal installations. Some become say it won’t be long before the frogs appear (video from the past years, when it worked).

“The cost of the citizens who vote for hugs, kisses, martyrs, carnations and jokes of politicians who promise spell instead of work, seriousness, realism and healthy projects, meant to bring surplus, not just delight, it is always a painful one.” says a dissatisfied local.

The expenses necessary for repairs and restoration of the artesian in Deva exceed 200,000 euros, according to the local administration.

“There were many discussions regarding the current state of the artesian fountain, the fact that no maintenance works were carried out, neither to the installations, nor to the tiles on the walls of the fountain. The problem is that I found the degradation including the waterproofing, besides the outdated installations, which were not rehabilitated. Euro ”said Lucian Rus recently, the mayor of Deva.

Some became even requested the reconfiguration of the artesian, which they consider oversized and expensive. According to the mayor, the fountain will not be abolished, being considered a symbol of the Deva.

Expensive repairs to the kinetic fountain of Resita

The kinetic fountain inaugurated in 1984 in the civic center of Reșița municipality became a landmark of the locality. The artesian was made by the sculptor Constantin Lucaci (1923 – 2014), made of stainless steel, being a monument that combines art with engineering, reminiscent of the long tradition of the city, in metallurgy and hydroconstructions.

The artist from Bocșa (Caraș – Severin) made nine such wells (with moving pieces), which were located in Constanta Drobeta – Turnu Severin, Vaslui, Resita, Brăila, Giurgiu and Alba Iulia. All have become the attractions of the cities that host them, but in some cases the cost of maintenance and repairs are difficult to bear by local administrations.

Artesianan sanctified by priests

Since 2019, three artesian fountains adorn the Square of King Ferdinand from the municipality of Hunedoara. The area of the Civic Center was rehabilitated with European funds, through an investment of about two million euros, of which half meant the construction of the musical artesian in front of the Culture House (video).

In 2019, a priesthood priest sanctified the fountain that occupies an area of 350 square meters and a diameter of 21 meters. In the five years since its inauguration, time has left signs on its structure.

The marble with which the degraded musical artesian was adorned, due to the many local, especially children, who climbed on the edges of the construction, the water pressure and its games were reduced, and the music was more and more rare accompanying the light games. Recently, the fountain in Hunedoara was put back into operation, after the cold period in which it remained.

The most spectacular artesian fountains in Romania

In September 2018, the new artesian fountains in the center of the capital were inaugurated. The most spectacular is the fountain in Unirii Square, with four “water screens” oriented towards the four cardinal points. The 44 fountain complex covers 1.4 kilometers, from Alba Iulia Square to Constitution Square. The equipment was installed in the structures of the communist period, and the central sculptural element was kept. The investment amounted to about nine million euros.

Initially painted in orange, the fountain was rehabilitated in 2012 and received the white and blue colors, with the transition to recirculated water from the public network. In the past, the water from the drilling, rich in salts left a brown tint, the colors having to mask this effect.

Built according to the Bellagio model in Las Vegas, it has 1,000 mouths of water and a light organ. The music is recorded by the Pitesti Philharmonic Orchestra. It was made in four months and was part of a modernization stage of the center, with an estimated budget at ten million lei.
