War Medicine in Romania 2025: Operated children without a clear diagnosis

In a hospital in Romania, many children end up with unnecessary surgery. This is because, doctors are forced to go on the stubbornness, only with diagnostic suspicions, due to the lack of imaging support. The radiologists’ crisis is maintained throughout the country.

The “Mavromati” County Hospital in Botosani is the largest hospital unit with beds in the Moldovan area. However, the hospital has a special crisis of radiologists. Although there are modern equipment, purchased on different financing axes, it almost has no one to operate. There are only three radiologists who provide all the investigations of x -ray, ultrasound, computerized tomography and MRI. For this reason, many doctors remain discovered on the imaging side during a guards. They are forced to work on the stubbornness, that is, with diagnostic suspicions, until the possibility of performing radiological investigations.

“The diagnosis of certainty appears only post-operative”

The situation affects both doctors and patients. It was reached the situation in which the little patients from the pediatrics end up undergo surgery although it was not necessarily needed. Doctors do exploration interventions to find out the diagnosis. They admit that if they had the support of radiology, they would not have to intervene surgery. During this time, the patient has to suffer the intervention, but also the post-operative recovery period, although the situation could have been solved only with medication.

“We are very stupid at the imaging side. We are discovered during a guard. Due to the lack of staff, everyone knows a secret. Patients get to be admitted with diagnostic suspicion. Non-diagonist. That is, you do not have a diagnosis of certainty. And the diagnosis of certainty appears only in the post-operator, or by an open exploration, or by an abortion. Moreover, if we have the exploration part. Conservative.says the doctor Simona Baniciuc, the head of the surgery compartment at the Pediatrics section of the “Mavromati” County Hospital.

“For us the belly of a patient is like a Kinder egg with surprises”

The situation is even more complicated for pediatric surgeons. And this is when the interventions and pathologies offer enough surprises anyway, even when the doctor has a well -established plan.

“For us the belly of a patient is like a kinder egg with surprises. When you open the patient you can make a beating plan, but you wake up that the conduct changes. You can find instead of an appendix, a divertic, or both concomitant pathologies that forces you automatically and at the second operating point. You will find a perforated ulcer.adds doctor Simona Baniciuc. This is why radiological examinations are very important for doctors, but also for patients. On the one hand, a series of surgery could be avoided, but at the same time there is more data for the doctor when approaching a pathology.

The radiologous crisis is present at national level. A doctor with a specialization on imaging has become almost a luxury in public hospitals. In 2023 there were 1800 radiologists at over 500 hospitals (300 state and 200 private). Many young people prefer to work privately. In addition, university centers are preferred to the detriment of provincial hospitals.
