Romanian officials, from interim president Ilie Bolojan, to Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu and parliamentarians from all parties, said in unison that the American delegation understood the arguments based on which the presidential elections were canceled.

However, behind the scenes, the Republican Congressmen, some of them even close to Donald Trump, were insistently interested if the annulment of the elections was caused, in fact, the presence in the final of a perceived candidate, in this case Călin Georgescu.
The parliamentarians arrived in Romania, especially the Republicans, were interested in why the second round of the presidential elections in December was canceled.
“Some came to Bucharest with the idea that the elections were canceled because Georgescu is conservative, not for relations with Russia or the obscure financing of the campaign. I hope I clarified them, although it is difficult to explain the process: the renaming of the votes, the validation of the first tour and immediately the cancellation of the entire electoral process. We tried to explain how harmful it would have been the installation of Călin Georgescu at the Cotroceni Palace”, Says one of the parliamentarians present at the discussions with the American delegation.
The gold and PNL parliamentarians, those who had more detailed discussions with Republican officials, have given assurances that the Conservative electorate in Romania has at least two options in the May Presidential Election: George Simion and Crin Antonescu.
The gold parliamentarians insisted that the annulment of the elections was a decision influenced by the ruling coalition, but no one asked the second tour back, sources participating in the discussions.
“All, Republicans or Democrats, have asked us to organize free and correct choices, not to reach the cancellation of the poll. I assured him that this time there would be no problems. I hope it is a first step to recover the partnership with the US”, I say the sources quoted.
The American delegation has promised to support the lifting of visas for Romanian citizens, as the Biden Administration has decided. In addition, congressmans have given assurances that the US is still interested in NATO’s eastern flank, so Romania remains a strategic point on the map of American interests.
