“The seats are cramped and uncomfortable, there's barely any leg room, and not to mention, your head keeps bobbing from side to side as soon as you fall asleep”writes the nypost publication.
According to psychologist Erica Terblanche, the tried-and-true way to fall asleep at cruising altitude is a method known as “crossing the alpha bridge”- which proves that “counting sheep” it's not just a story. Therefore, several steps must be taken.
“You need to lie comfortably on an airplane seat and close your eyes while counting to 30. After that, close your eyes again, count to 30, open them once more and count to five. Then close your eyes completely and focus on your breathing. While most passengers will probably fall asleep after the first attempt, it may take more than one cycle to fully fall asleep”claims Erica Terblanche.
A study shows that ambient noise in the cabin, such as the loud hum of engines or people talking, can disrupt sleep.
Also, uncomfortable seats and flight anxiety can contribute to lack of sleep during the flight.
