Nicușor Dan says what are the chances to run for the presidential elections this year and those of 2029

The general mayor of the Capital, Nicușor Dan, stated in a televised interview that there is not the slightest chance of his candidacy in this year’s presidential elections, but he does not rule out a candidacy in 2029, although he would like one more mandate at the City Hall.

At the moment, I am very concerned about how the next 4 years and a few months will be as mayor of Bucharest and that is my only concern“, said Nicuşor Dan, on Prima TV, when asked if he did not want to run for the presidential elections.

Asked why he publicly demanded that the elections take place on time at the end of the year, the general mayor replied: “It was a democratic principle, because it is not normal for very important elections to have a campaign that takes place when people are on vacation. That was all“. “It was purely a gesture of positioning in a matter related to democracy in Romania,” Dan added, after the filmmaker noted that his statements have fueled even more speculation about him running for president.

When asked if the political context will be such that some parties ask him to run for the head of state, he would reflect on such a decision, the general mayor of the Capital replied: “To reflect is one thing, to act is another. We are not in that context. I received a mandate for 4 years of administration of Bucharest and that is all my concern“.

Nicușor Dan said that including USR president Elena Lasconi asked him to return to the party and run for the presidential elections.

“Privately, of course there are many discussions. It was Mrs. Lasconi who, before announcing her candidacy for the presidency, said that I would be suitable to do this”, said Nicușor Dan when asked if there were USR members who asked him to return to the party and run for president.

Asked if there is even the slightest chance that he will run for the presidential elections this year, the general mayor said: “No no no. I mean, I have a mandate, I prepared for it, I have continuity, no”.

However, Nicușor Dan does not exclude the possibility of a candidacy for Cotroceni in 2029, stating that “cso be it, we’ll see each other again”, but that in principle he would like another term at the Capital City Hall in 2028.

“What will happen next is very difficult to say. In principle, I want to run for a new mandate at the Capital City Hall in 2028, because the city has some problems, some of which we will solve while others, especially finer image issues, still require a mandate. What will all Romanian politics look like, what will it be…, after all, what does it mean to be a politician, someone who looks at what the citizens’ expectations are and who tries to solve them through his actions. We will see what will happen, but, in principle, I want another mandate in 2028 at the City Hall“, said the mayor of the Capital, when asked if he intends to run for the presidential elections in 2029.
