Alternative routes for Bulgaria, Greece or Turkey, once the Friendship Bridge repairs start

In the context of the fact that from Wednesday, July 10, in the middle of the summer season, the Bulgarians start repair work on the Giurgiu-Ruse Friendship Bridge, we present you some alternative routes to reach Bulgaria, Greece or Turkey.

In the middle of the season, the Bulgarians started repair work on the Friendship Bridge

If you depart from Bucharest, from the North Railway Station, the Romania-Bulgaria customs crossing points and the distances are: Giurgiu Customs – Ruse = 70 km – Varna = 285 km (total), Negru Vodă Customs = 257 km – Varna = 363 km (total), Vama Vama Veche = 270 km – Varna = 391 km, Vama Ostrov – Silistra (by ferry) = 129 or 145 km – Varna = 288 km (total).

Also, from Vama Turnu Măgurele (departing from Bucharest) it is 454 km to Varna, and from Vama Zimnicea (departing from Bucharest) 404 km to Varna, according to Agerpres.

If you leave Craiova, the routes are: Vama Calafat – Vidin = 300 km to Varna, Vama Kulata = 783 km; Vama Bechet = 306 km to Varna – Vama Kulata = 601 km in total; Vama Turnu Măgurele (by ferry departing from Craiova) 135 km = Vama Kulata 541 km (total).

According to the tour operator IRI Travel, the prices for crossing the Danube by ferry from Zimnicea, valid from May 2024, are: car – 65 lei, passenger – 5 lei, motorcycle – 15 lei, car 6 – 9 seats – 100 lei, utility vehicle 2 – 3.5 t – 100 lei, platform – 150 lei, truck – 250 lei and coach – 250 lei.

“It is a reality that the Giurgiu – Ruse border crossing point is the most visited by Romanian tourists, especially those from Bucharest – Ilfov, Ploieşti or Braşov. This summer, the bridge will be much more difficult to access, and tourists need patience. It is the decision of the Bulgarian authorities to carry out the repairs now. So we, as tourism consultants, have to recommend alternative transport to tourists. Of course, part of our bus journeys also choose alternatives to pass at Vama Veche, Negru Vodă or by ferry to Silistra”, said Lucian Bădîrcea, CEO of IRI Travel, in a press release

According to CNAIR, the Bulgarian side decided to close the traffic on one lane, with a delay of three minutes, with traffic lights, for the first phase of the excavations, and then to see if it is necessary for the bridge to be completely closed to road traffic. In the first phase, one lane of traffic will be closed, and the traffic will be carried out alternately, at intervals of three minutes, starting from July 10.
