Mourning in sport: Mircea Grabovschi, former world champion, died

The former great Romanian handball player Mircea Grabovschi, world champion in 1974, passed away on Tuesday, at the age of 71, the Romanian Handball Federation announced on its official website.

On July 16, Mircea Grabovschi suffered a stroke and was hospitalized. On Tuesday, the former Olympic vice-champion from 1976 passed away.

Mircea Grabovschi was born on December 22, 1952, in Sighişoara, being an important player of the Dinamo team.

In August 1976, after becoming Olympic vice-champion, the handball player was decorated with the Second Class Sports Merit order. In March 1982 he was decorated again, this time for the outstanding results obtained at the World University Games in Bucharest in 1981.

In December 2000, Grabovschi received the National Medal “Faithful Service“1st class. In 2009 he was again decorated with the order “Second Class Sports Merit“. In the same year he was appointed “Honorary citizen” of the city of Sighişoara. In 2013, the sports hall of the National College “Mircea Eliade” from Sighisoara received the name “Mircea Grabovski“.

Among others, Mircea Grabovschi was national vice-champion in bridge.
