Oana Țoiu participates in the extraordinary meeting of EU ministers regarding the situation in the Middle East. In Romania, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard is on the list of terrorist organizations

The Romanian Foreign Minister, Oana Țoiu, participates in the extraordinary meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council, convened after the death of the Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and the escalation of tensions in the Middle East.

The Romanian Foreign Minister, Oana Țoiu, announced that she will take part, on Sunday, March 1, in the extraordinary meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union, convened in the context of the rapid deterioration of the security situation in the Middle East, after the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the intensification of military confrontations in the region.

In a message published on the X network, she emphasized the importance of the moment for regional stability and international security and specified that, in Romania, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard is on the list of terrorist organizations.

Romania’s participation in the emergency meeting of the EU comes at a moment of maximum tension in the Middle East, in which the international community tries to avoid the expansion of the conflict and maintain regional stability.

“The announcement of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s death is a turning point.

Romania supports the right of Iranians to choose their future, the right to freedom and the right to be safe.

In the absence of the predictability offered by international law, including in the area of non-proliferation, the risk of a spiral of violence in the Middle East remains a major concern, and international collaboration to de-escalate the situation is essential.

In the context of the current UN Security Council meeting, we reaffirm Romania’s position, according to which it is essential to ensure regional peace and security in the Middle East. States involved in military action have a responsibility to protect the civilian population.

I had an in-depth discussion with the Romanian ambassadors in the region, who informed me about the situation on the ground. We also had exchanges of views with counterparts from Europe and the region.

We share their concerns regarding regional security and express Romania’s solidarity with Qatar, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, as well as the firm condemnation of the drone and missile attacks launched by Iran against them.

In recent months, given the Iranian regime’s brutal actions against its own citizens, as well as its continued non-compliance with nuclear non-proliferation agreements and provisions, we adopted a European sanctions regime and designated the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization.

Iran is also the state that provided the design for Russian drones used in a brutal conflict on the European continent.

Today I will attend the extraordinary meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council, where we will discuss both the ways in which we protect our citizens in the region and the ways of diplomatic dialogue with the states of the region and with our transatlantic partners to prevent a long-term conflict”. broadcast Oana Ţoiu on the X platform, Sunday, March 1.
