Exclusive Hospital employees will be able to report medical errors anonymously

The President of the National Authority for Quality Management in Health (ANMCS) announced at the Healthcare Forum. Why is a different reporting system needed?

The ANMCS president explained why it is necessary to rethink the reporting system, which is currently not efficient.

“A US State Department report showed that in 2023, one in four American patients will experience an adverse effect during a hospital stay. And we thought that if this is the situation in the United States, here it is a little more. From the reports we have received so far, this does not appear to be the case. And then we’re trying to change that paradigm of adverse event reporting,” said Valentin-Florin Ciocan.

How reporting will be done

He also explained how reporting will be done.

,,Everything will be standardized, each hospital will receive a QR code, and all hospital employees – nurses and doctors – will be able to report suspected adverse events. When it is reported, the report will reach ANMCS and the hospital management, which will have five days to confirm or deny the event”.

What will happen to the collected data

“If the event is denied, the management assumes it. If it is confirmed, we will try to understand why it happened and try to correct it”stated the ANMCS president.

“It is very important to know that – and hospitals must understand – that ANMCS is not a control institution. This information is collected on a non-accusatory basis. Just learning. We propose that by better gathering this information and analyzing it better, we can return to hospitals a viable information that they can rely on. That is, let’s tell the hospital <> or let’s go to the Ministry of Health and the decision makers and tell them <>. So that the legislation can be amended. For the benefit of the hospital, first of all. (…) We are trying to return a learning institution, first and foremost. What is missing at the moment in Romania.”, added Valentin-Florin Ciocan.

Anonymous reporting of medical errors, new hospital accreditation rules and partnership with Belgium for major burn centres. These are just a few of the discussions that have taken place at the Healthcare Forum so far.
