Die-hard Taylor Swift fans were so eager to get a memento from the singer’s low-key wedding that they ended up paying $25 for pieces of trash found near where the event took place.
The Shake It Off singer married NFL star Travis Kelce in early July in a ceremony at Madison Square Garden, where the couple hosted a lavish event attended by hundreds of celebrity guests.
Many fans of the artist came to New York in the hope of seeing her at least for a few moments at what some commentators called a real “royal wedding”.
But strict confidentiality measures meant that very little information reached the public domain, despite the fact that more than 1,000 guests attended the event. In these conditions, admirers had to find less common souvenirs.
Among the objects collected from the streets around Madison Square Garden by New York artist Justin Gignac are cigarette butts, an ovulation test, water bottle caps, lollipops “Ring Pop”police cordon tape, straws, disposable cutlery and a single AirPod for the left ear. They went on sale online for $25. All the items were sold in less than 24 hours after they were put on the market, writes the Daily Mail.
The artist claims to have already collected $1,250 from this unusual initiative. Each item is sealed in a small plastic cube, decorated with the wedding slogan, “JUST&T MARRIED”and with the date of the ceremony, to prevent leaks or unpleasant odors.
“Attracts a lot of Taylor Swift fans who just want a little nudge to the wedding”said Gignac, who sells these items on his website, New York City Garbage. “I try to capture important cultural moments in New York, and this felt like one of them. Basically, I wanted to create a little time capsule of that moment“, he explained.
Gignac, who also sells other waste collected from the city, says he tied some of the objects in knots to a “accentuate the theme of the wedding”. He specified that all waste was collected from outside the secure perimeter set up around Madison Square Garden for Taylor Swift’s wedding and not from inside the venue.
