The projector of the only cinema in Bucharest – Cinema City AFI Cotroceni – where you can watch films in IMAX format broke, on Friday, to the frustration of moviegoers who broke their working day to get to Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey from the early hours. It is the first feature film shot entirely with 70mm IMAX cameras.
Since the premiere in Romania, on July 17, of the blockbuster “Odyssey”, the first feature film shot entirely with IMAX cameras on 70 millimeter format, moviegoers filled the theaters to see Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece. Tickets sold like hot cakes, especially since there are only two IMAX theaters in the country.
Moviegoers were disappointed, on Friday, in the first part of the day, at the only cinema in Bucharest – Cinema City AFI Cotroceni – where films can be watched in IMAX format. After days of waiting to see their favorite director’s film, viewers were informed that the projector had broken down. Those who paid the entrance received vouchers that will allow them to purchase other tickets, but this will not help them much because the next screenings are also sold out.
After the cancellation of the first screening on Friday, employees were unable to provide information about the following screenings today, at 7 and 10 p.m. The film will run in theaters for at least another month.
There are two IMAX cinemas in the country: in Timișoara, Cinema City in the Shopping City Timișoara area, and the one in the Capital.
The film made for IMAX
The epic production “The Odyssey”, directed by Christopher Nolan and officially released in cinemas, marks a historical turning point for the world film industry. This is the first feature film shot entirely with IMAX cameras on 70mm format, completely eliminating the use of digital cameras or standard 35mm formats.
With an estimated budget of $250 million, the modern adaptation of the myth of Odysseus promises viewers the most immersive visual experience ever created.
Unlike Nolan’s previous productions, such as Oppenheimer or Interstellar, where only certain action sequences used the giant analog format, The Odyssey uses the technology on film from the first scene to the last.
To overcome historical equipment limitations, the team led by cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema used the new IMAX Keighley Film Camera models.
The film runs on screen at a huge native resolution, estimated by experts to be the equivalent of 16K, offering extremely fine texture, organic colors and a depth of image impossible to replicate with conventional digital projections.

Viewers watching the film in a true IMAX theater will benefit from an expanded 1.43:1 aspect ratio, which means 40% more visible action on screen. Grand images of battles and raging seas will fill giant floor-to-ceiling screens.
However, fans face a major logistical problem: only about 41 theaters worldwide have the technical infrastructure and mechanical projectors needed to run the film directly from the massive IMAX 70mm film rolls.
In the remaining 1,800+ IMAX theaters around the world, the film will be screened through an adapted digital conversion that partially alters the original resolution and aspect ratio. It is also the case of cinemas in Romania.
For the pure experience envisioned by Nolan, fans have to travel to Western Europe, the Czech Republic, Germany or Great Britain.
