Anatol Șalaru, former Minister of Defense in the Republic of Moldova, criticized the position expressed by the first vice-president of the AUR, Dan Dungaciu, regarding the need to reduce the support provided by Romania to the Republic of Moldova, arguing that such an approach coincides with Moscow’s interests.
In an intervention on Antena 3 CNN, Șalaru stated that the relationship between Romania and the Republic of Moldova should not be treated as a foreign policy issue, but as one of strategic interest for Bucharest.
“Dan Dungaciu looks at the Republic of Moldova with the eyes of the Kremlin. Romania must not look at the Republic of Moldova as an external problem. Romania must look at the Republic of Moldova as an internal business“, said the former minister.
The statements come after Dan Dungaciu criticized, in a post published on Facebook on July 21, the way in which the relationship between Bucharest and Chisinau is managed and proposed that financial support for the Republic of Moldova be reorganized through a mechanism he called “Moldova fund“.
Anatol Șalaru rejected the idea that the support given to Chişinău would represent a burden for the Romanian state.
“It is not a problem, it is a partnership, it is a situation in which Romania is directly interested in the Republic of Moldova succeedingthat”, said Şalaru.
“Romania’s security begins at the Dniester”
The former minister argued that the main reason why Romania must continue supporting the Republic of Moldova is security.
“Romania’s security does not start at the Prut, it starts at the Dniester”he said.
Șalaru also invoked economic arguments, showing that Romanian investments across the Prut could be affected in the event of a reduction in the support given to Chisinau.
“Romania has invested almost one billion euros in the Republic of Moldova, and the termination of support for the Republic of Moldova would make these Romanian investments, which have created around 30,000 jobs, vulnerable“, said the former minister.
In his opinion, the messages regarding the limitation of aid to the Republic of Moldova serve Russia’s objectives in the region.
Şalaru also rejected the idea that the Republic of Moldova would benefit from resources from Romania for free.
“Today, the Republic of Moldova does not take anything for free from Romania; gas, electricity, oil products are bought from the private market and they are bought at market prices, they are not taken for free”, said the former minister.
