The European Swimming Championships in Paris shift their focus, starting August 10, to the pool events. The competition started as early as the end of July with artistic swimming and diving competitions, and during this period the open water swimming races take place on the Seine. From August 10, the show moves to the Paris Aquatics Centre, where Europe’s best swimmers will fight for medals.
The most followed Romanian athlete will undoubtedly be David Popovici. The Olympic champion is rated among the favorites for the 100m and 200m freestyle events and will enter the competition on August 11. Popovici thus returns to the pool where he wrote history at the Olympic Games, where he won gold in the 200-meter freestyle and bronze in the 100-meter freestyle. In Paris, his objective is clear: to defend his European titles won in 2024 in Belgrade in both events.
Popovici debuts with the 100 meter freestyle event
David Popovici will make his debut at the European Championships in Paris on Tuesday, August 11, in the 100 meters freestyle. The schedule established by European Aquatics provides for two sessions each day. In the morning, from 10:30, the series will take place, and in the evening, starting at 19:30, the semi-finals and finals are scheduled.
For Popovici, the first day of the competition will be a crowded one. The Romanian will enter the pool in the heats, and if he secures the qualification, he will return the same evening for the semifinals. The grand final is scheduled for Wednesday, August 12, from 7:30 p.m., when the new European 100-meter freestyle champion will be decided.
After the 100-meter race, Popovici will move on to his favorite event, the 200-meter freestyle. The Romanian currently holds the Olympic, world and European titles for this distance. The heats are scheduled for Thursday, August 13, in the morning, and the semifinals will take place the same evening. The 200 meters freestyle final will be played on Friday, August 14, from 19:30.

The competition, scheduled between August 10 and 16, will be fully broadcast by TVR 1 and TVR Sport. The two stations will broadcast both the morning sessions, in which the qualifying rounds are contested, as well as the semi-finals and finals each evening. Thus, sports fans will be able to follow the course of Popovici and the other representatives of Romania throughout the competition.
