The Minister of Justice, Alina Gorghiu, said on Wednesday that she agrees with a recommendation made by the Venice Commission, which stipulates that high-ranking prosecutors and their deputies should be appointed for longer periods of time.

“I will publicly address the question of whether the three-year mandate is sufficient for the implementation of a reforming and consistent managerial project. It is a thesis that requires careful reflection and will have to be put to rest. Sure, maybe 2024 is not the best year to discuss very sensitive topics related to the judiciary for obvious reasons, but I think that at some point this topic will have to be discussed“, said Gorghiu, at the Public Ministry's balance sheet.
She added that the constant changes of ministers and heads of institutions had “toxic” effects on the implementation of projects.
“I tell you as a politician with some experience after 20 years that I have noticed the toxic effects that the constant changes, frequent changes of ministers, heads of institutions, had on the implementation of relevant managerial projects, on the implementation of healthy public policies, all this requiring time, requiring the stability of the systems. I confess that I resonate with one of the recommendations of the Venice Commission. The one that provides that high-ranking prosecutors and their deputies should be appointed for longer periods of time, without the possibility of renewing the mandate. If we look at the EU, the duration of the mandates of the general prosecutor in the member states varies between 3 and 9 years. And for the last 3 years he has only been in Greece. The rest have a significant term of office“, appreciated the Minister of Justice, according to Agerpres.
According to her, next year, when a reasonable period of time will pass since the entry into force of the justice laws, will probably be a good time to carry out an objective evaluation together with the judicial system of these ideas for improving some provisions from laws.
