The organizers are talking about the most ambitious edition: “LIVE music from Europe is discussed in Bucharest”.

“Between 20 and 24 May 2026, East European Music Conference (EEMC) returns to Bucharest with the most ambitious edition so far. Over five days and across multiple city center venues, EEMC brings together artists, festival directors, venue managers, safety experts, bookers, promoters, decision makers, technicians, researchers, students and audiences from across Europe and beyond — from clubs to policy tables — to shape the future of LIVE music, in real life, togetheră”, it is stated in a press release from the EEC

Founded in 2017, EEMC has become a reference platform for the live music sector in Central and Eastern Europe — a European-level conference built around dialogue, cultural diversity, freedom of expression and democratic exchange.

The 2026 edition reflects this ambition on an expanded scale: it is the first edition designed not around a single building, but the city itself, with the conference taking place as a cultural ecosystem in the Old Center of Bucharest.

“In a divided world, we believe in the power of real meetings—LIVE—as a space for creativity, exploration, empathy, and the exercise of tolerance. EEMC was built precisely for this moment, and the invitation is open: come, bring your questions, your disagreements, the ideas you’re afraid to speak out loud. The only thing missing is you“, says Codruța Vulcu, founder of the East European Music Conference.

Opening event: Balkan Taksim & Friends

EEMC 2026 opens with a special concert dedicated to regional heritage, experiment and cultural dialogue. Balkan Taksim share the stage with Svetlana Spajić — one of the most respected voices of the Balkan vocal tradition — and Zvonko Trailović – a musician with a deep understanding of the region, from an ethno-folkloric perspective.

Traditional Balkan sounds, electronic textures, oral histories and contemporary LIVE performance meet on the same stage in a statement about connection between generations, borders and musical languages.

Gala EEMC – Alternosfera Theatrol, at the Bucharest National Theatre

On the evening of May 21, the “Ion Luca Caragiale” National Theater in Bucharest will host the EEMC Gala — one of the central moments of the 2026 edition — with a special Alternosfera – Theatroll concert.

EEMC 2026 takes place at a defining moment for the European live music sector. Recent independent research has brought into focus the concentration of ownership in the area of festivals, event venues and ticketing infrastructure, the structural fragility of independent spaces that support emerging artists, and the urgent question of how European cultural policies — including the European Commission’s Culture Compass for Europe — translate into real protections and opportunities.
