Greece is the summer dream of many Romanians. Sun, big, relaxation-and sometimes a road accident that turns everything into a bureaucratic nightmare. What do you do when the car is destroyed by a local, and the insurance company only gives you silence and promises?
Accident with Romanian tourists in Greece – waiting for Facebook collage damages
On February 1, 2025, a Romanian on vacation in northern Greece was involved in a road accident caused by a local driver. The blame was clear, but after four months, the Greek insurance company has not yet paid damages, and the Romanian representative offers only vague promises. This is not an exception, but a situation commonly encountered by Romanian tourists in Greece who complain that they have lived nightmare.
“Child” with 100 km/h and the beginning of a nightmare
In a dangerous curve near Katerini, a young Greek driver hit over 100 km/h the car of Romanian tourists. Although the blame was assumed and confirmed by the police, the car was seriously damaged: cracked rim, wing, drilled door, and rear bar held with screws. However, after months, the damages estimated by the injured at over 5,000 euros, have not come so far, and the answers received are always the same: “A little patience …”.
The Greek insurance company has a representation in Romania, but without result. Instead of a rapid resolution, a race of the nerves stretched to the maximum, among the unanswered phones, delayed quotes and postponed promises, began. For this reason, the injuries decided to ask for help on the Internet to find solutions to the holidays in Greece: “I went to Greece dozens dozens dozens, but I never had problems. Now, when I really need the help of the system, no one does anything concrete. Just promises.”
Wave of reactions online: “It happened to me!”
Dozens of messages began to run online after this story from other Romanians who have gone through similar experiences: “I received the money after 11 months”; “Without a trial, I saw no lion”; “Exactly the same company, exactly the same silence. He hopes to leave you”; “It insists! It lasts, but it is solved”; “After I called the ASF, in a few days it was resolved”; “Baar guided me to the correct company, but without a trial, I saw no lion.”
Internet users confirm the same pattern: Greek companies systematically delay the payment of damages to foreigners. Vague promises, closed phones and lack of reaction are the norm. They draw attention: without finding from the police, in Greece there is no “Nirtable” – And the insurers can deny the facts at any time. Others say that only with an official complaint to the ASF and constant pressures, the compensation is obtained. Or that some companies in Romania can pay directly and then recover their money from the Greeks. Some received the money only after the BAAR intervention or even processes in court.
Unanim advice? Document, insist, claim. And prepare for a bureaucratic marathon.
What can you do if you suffer the same
From the collective experiences of the injured, a clear list of recommended steps resulted:
- Don’t wait endlessly -If after 2-3 months you do not receive a concrete answer, you go to legal measures. Telephone promises have no legal value.
- Notice ASF and Baar – ASF (The Financial Supervisory Authority) can press the Romanian correspondent. Baar (Romanian insurers office) can guide and support you. The online complaint is free and effective.
- Appeals to a lawyer – An official order can unlock a file blocked for months. A well-written e-mail in legal language works wonders.
- Don’t leave without Casco -The green book and the RCA do not always provide complete protection. Only an International Casco policy assures you that you will not remain with the damaged car and without damages.
- Seek support in the community – Groups of Romanians from Greece and social networks offer useful tips and examples of solutions in practice.
Conclusion: Greece is beautiful but the system can be ruthless
Accidents do not take into account landscape or goodwill. You can follow all the rules, but if the local system does not cooperate, you risk facing months of frustration and blocked roads.
The solution? Be informed, legally prepared and vocal. Public pressure and official actions are the only effective weapons against insurers passivity.
