Nicuşor Dan: The decision of the Constitutional Court to recount the votes from the presidential elections is unjustified

The mayor of the capital, Nicusor Dan, believes that the decision of the Constitutional Court regarding the recount of the votes from the first round of the presidential elections is “unjustified”.

In this regard, he cited cases from the local and European parliamentary elections, in which several people indicated that their option would not have been found in the counting results from the section where they voted, writes Agerpres.

“I think that the decision of the Constitutional Court is unjustified, because it dealt with the appeal of a candidate who obtained 1% and who obviously has no chance to enter the second round, and because it induces a disproportion between the measure that was taken now and the measures taken in other types of elections. I remind you that in the local and European parliamentary elections this summer there were hundreds of people who, on their own signature, said that they voted for a party and the vote was not was found on the ballot. That is, they had zero. And then it is not natural that in situations that are clearly disproportionate the solution should be the other way around.”said Nicuşor Dan, in a press conference held at the headquarters of the General City Hall.

The mayor added that “it’s not normal” there should be no “guarantee” regarding the fact that the vote recount process is correct.

“We have some bags of votes, about which we do not know exactly where they were during this period. We do not have representatives of all the parties for the recount. So, we are going to an area that is very difficult to control. We are going to an area in that people lose even more confidence in state institutions. (…) I expect the courts to make the best decision in the unfortunate situation that has been created”the general mayor also said.

The Plenum of the Constitutional Court examined, on Thursday, the request to annul the elections for the position of President of Romania on November 24, 2024, formulated by Cristian Vasile Terheş, and, with unanimity of votes, ordered the reverification and recount of all the ballots including the votes validly expressed and null ones.

USR submitted to the Bucharest Court of Appeal an appeal against the decision of the Central Electoral Bureau regarding the recount of votes from all polling stations in the country.
