ETERN, a captivating film about love, regrets and fundamental choices, will premiere in Romanian cinemas on November 29, 2024, distributed by August Film. Directed by Ulaa Salim, this unique film sensitively blends themes of climate change with an emotional story of personal and collective destiny. The story explores the complexity of choices made in the face of an uncertain future, bringing to the fore the question: What would it have been like if we had made a fundamentally different choice?
A story about choices and regrets
Elias (Simon Sears), a young climate change researcher, falls in love with Anita (Nanna Øland Fabricius), an aspiring singer. In a time of global crisis, Elias makes a difficult choice between joining the preparations for a crucial mission to save the planet or staying with the woman he loves. 15 years later, during the mission, Elias is overwhelmed by visions of an alternate life, where he would have chosen differently. The story is a deep meditation on time, the choices and regrets that define every human being.
“I think we all have at least one moment in our past that we think about from time to time and wonder what if. It’s about those moments when we chose what we could, perhaps, instead of what we really wanted. It’s about those moments with the help of which life teaches us, over time, about what is really important to us. Etern captures this vulnerable and human revelation in an almost indescribable way that only movies can. We are grateful to share this title and want it to be seen by all who would benefit from it! “, said Matei Truța, co-founder and managing partner of August Film.
Beyond the palpable chemistry between the protagonists Simon Sears and the charismatic Nanna Øland Fabricius, known in Denmark as the successful pop star Oh Land, the film stands out for its exceptional cinematography, signed by Jacob Moller (Best Cinematography at Gothenburg Film Festival – 2023 for the film Copenhagen Does Not Exist). Etern is full of immersive and sensitive frames that capture the emotional complexity of the characters. From the spectral light and deep colors that dominate the underwater scenes, to the tense atmosphere of the nightclubs, every frame is thought to reflect the inner states of the characters. The red and green lights that often envelop the scenes suggest passion and regret, and the narrow and constricting spaces, such as the submarine or the clubs, heighten the feeling of emotional confinement. The visual, video contrasts between the dark scenes and the brighter daytime scenes emphasize the passage of time and the change in the characters’ perception of their lives and choices.
ETERN had its world premiere at the International Film Festival of Rotterdam 2024, in the Competition for the Big Screen, also being part of the Official Selection of the International Film Festivals of Gothenburg and Neuchâtel.
From Friday, November 29, ETERN arrives in cinemas in Bacău, Baia Mare, Bistrița, Botoșani, Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Gura Humorului, Iași, Miercurea Ciuc, Oradea, Pitești, Sfântu Gheorghe, Sibiu and Timișoara. The program will be constantly updated on the film page, on the official website.
