Thousands of moviegoers travel hundreds or even thousands of miles to see “The Odyssey,” Christopher Nolan’s new film, in IMAX format on 70mm film. A cinema in Prague has become one of the most sought-after destinations in Europe for this experience.
In Europe there are only six cinemas equipped for IMAX projections on 70mm film (IMAX 70mm), Il Post writes.
Three of them are in England (two in London and one in Manchester), and the others are in Brussels (Belgium), Montpellier (France) and Prague (Czech Republic).
Over the past two weeks, Prague’s cinema, Cinema City, has become one of the most sought-after destinations for European moviegoers.
Prague has become a popular destination for moviegoers due to lower transport and accommodation costs and easy access from Central Europe.
To cope with demand, the Cinema City cinema screens the film up to five times a day, attracting audiences from 15 European countries and more than 22,000 visitors from abroad until 27 July.
The press office of the Arcadia cinema in Italy told Il Post that, as of July 16, more than 9,000 tickets had been sold for screenings of the film. “Odyssey” in the original version and on 70mm film.
Spectators came from all regions of Italy, but also from many European countries, such as the Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland. The cinema also attracted a smaller number of viewers from outside Europe, especially from Iran and the United States.
Films on 70mm film are made up of very large rolls, which must be assembled before projection into a single strip, a process that can take several hours. The most difficult stage is the joining of the rolls, which requires high precision and special equipment to avoid damage to the film.
Starring Matt Damon as Odysseus and Anne Hathaway as Penelope, The Odyssey was met with rave reviews and earned $264m (£198m) worldwide in its opening weekend, while also scoring a 97% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
