Irina Begu (35 years old), one of Romania’s most important tennis players in the last two decades, married Victor Crivoi (44 years old), a former ATP Top 100 player and, in recent years, the athlete’s coach.

Both had important careers in the professional circuit. Irina Begu reached the 22nd WTA rank in August 2016 and won six WTA singles titles. Over the years, she has been one of Romania’s constant presences at the most important tournaments in the world.
Victor Crivoi was, for his part, one of the few Romanian tennis players in recent decades who managed to break into the ATP Top 100. His best ranking was the 75th place in the world, achieved in 2009. He was also part of the Romanian Davis Cup team for several years.
After the end of his playing career, Crivoi moved to the other side of the net, and recently he was part of Irina Begu’s team. He helped the athlete in her attempt to return to the circuit after a break of almost ten months caused by medical problems.
It was a complicated season for Irina Begu
Begu is going through a difficult period from a sporting point of view. Injuries kept her away from competitions for a long time, and prolonged absences caused the Romanian to drop to 472nd place in the WTA ranking. In the first part of the 2026 season, she tried to return to the circuit benefiting from the protected classification. She also participated in Wimbledon, but was eliminated in the first round by British Katie Swan.
However, the medical problems reappeared and forced her to take another break.
Begu could not defend his title in Iasi
One of the most painful moments of the season came in July, when Irina Begu had to withdraw from the WTA 250 tournament in Iasi. The Romanian had special reasons for wanting to play in Moldova. In 2025, Begu had won the trophy in Iasi and was going to defend his title this summer. However, a leg injury overturned his plans.
The athlete then announced that she had suffered fractures in two fingers and that the doctors had recommended a period of recovery. “I suffered fractures in two toes, and the doctors recommended a recovery period. I am very sad and disappointed that I will miss one of my soul tournaments. Iași holds a special place in my heart. Here I lived some of the most beautiful moments of my career, and this year I was looking forward to coming back and trying to defend my title”, explained Irina Begu.
