The government meets in an emergency meeting on Monday 10 August at Victoria Palace from 16:00. The executive is to allocate money for interventions on the Danube, to raise the water level.
The government proposes the additional allocation of 5.1 million lei for emergency interventions on the Danube, aimed at redistributing part of the flow of the Bala branch to the Old Danube and reducing the risk of affecting the operation of the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant.
The measure aims to reduce the risk of affecting the operation of the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant, against the background of the severe hydrological drought.
“Through this draft normative act, it is proposed to approve the supplement of the funds necessary to finance some urgent and unforeseen expenses, in order to carry out, as an emergency, a temporary intervention for the redistribution of part of the flow of the Bala branch to the Old Danube.
The measure aims to manage the effects of the severe hydrological drought and reduce the risk of affecting the operation of the National Electric Power System, determined by the possibility of the unavailability of the units of the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant”, it is shown in the substantiation note of the draft Government decision.
The funds will be used as follows:

2.55 million lei – dredging works at the critical point Cochirleni, river km 309-304, for approximately 50,000 cubic meters;

2.55 million lei – dredging works at the Caragheorghe-Turcescu critical point, river km 345-342, for approximately 50,000 cubic meters.
On Sunday, the Secretary of State in the Ministry of Transport, Irinel Ionel Scrioșteanu, announced that the efforts of the last week for the intervention in the Bala area have led to the reversal of the decreasing trend of the water level and to a slight increase.
“Fight won, good result, but the danger has not passed. I am very glad that our efforts in the last week for the intervention in the Bala area have had good results and reactor 2 at the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant remains in operation.
Basically, we managed to reverse the downward trend with a slight upward trend. According to estimates, the 8 cm “gained” means that we managed to redirect to Cernavodă approximately 50 cubic meters of water per second”transmitted Irinel Ionel Scrioșteanu, on FB.
Ionel Scrioșteanu declared that the intervention in the Bala area was one of the most difficult missions in his mandate. He warned, however, that the danger has not passed.
“But the danger has not passed, the currents of the Danube are strong and can be very unpredictable. At any moment, the barges can be displaced from their current position and the redirection of the additional flow to Cernavodă can be reduced (or even canceled). To prevent such a scenario, in Bala, we continue the intervention and I will return during the day tomorrow with details about the activities in progress“, Irinel Ionel Scrioșteanu also transmitted.
In his opinion, the intervention is complex and involves several institutions and crews.
“I thank them, the crews on each ship, the AFDJ leadership and its representatives in the field, the representatives from ISU Dobrogea coordinated by Major Măcreanu Aurelian, the SMURD crews for their constant assistance, the representatives of Romanian Waters and all those involved”he specified.
The situation in Cernavodă became critical against the background of the sharp decrease in the flow of the Danube. The interventions in the Bala area sought to direct a larger amount of water to the arm that supplies the Cernavodă area, so that the conditions necessary for the operation of Reactor 2 of the nuclear power plant are maintained.
