The new system will introduce the possibility of traveling by train to several destinations with a single ticket, so that the schedule of a trip will be much simpler. It also eliminates the risk of additional ticket costs in the event of missed rides.

Currently, most passengers look for information on Seat61.com, one of the oldest sites providing such information regarding European train travel.

Other sites such as Rail Europe and Omio offer international train travel, but tickets are sold separately for each destination.

When the system will be launched

The new pan-European train reservation system would be launched in 2025, according to Euronews. The proposal for the single train ticket was made by the new European Union Commissioner for Transport, Greek Apostolos Tzitzikostas, which focuses on promoting sustainable transport solutions and decarbonisation. “It’s unbelievable that we don’t have something like this in 2024,” says Tzitzikostas, who points out that booking train travel should be as easy as air travel

Tzitzikostas also proposed a European high-speed rail network connecting European capitals, including through the use of night trains.

The Community of European Railway and Infrastructure Companies (CER), which represents more than 70 rail companies and national associations across Europe, was one of the first supporters of the scheme proposed by the new commissioner
