Over 10,000 15 -year -old students from Romania will participate this year in PISA tests, an international comparative study that measures their competences in reading, mathematics, sciences, English and digital knowledge.

PISA, the acronym for Program for International Student Assessment (program for international students’ evaluation), is a student evaluation program initiated by OECD three decades ago. This represents a comparative study of measuring the development of basic skills in three main fields – mathematics, reading and science – for 15 -year -olds from over 80 countries around the world, including Romania.
These tests provide not only a large perspective on how education systems prepare students for the challenges of daily life, but provide comparative data and stimulate the exchange of good practices between the participating countries for the continuous improvement of the quality of the educational field.
Pisa 2025. When testing and how children will be evaluated
The International Evaluation of PISA 2025 will take place in Romania between April 28 and June 9, and 10,000 students will participate in it. Children, who come from about 350 high schools, high schools and vocational schools, will participate in three competence assessments: mathematics, sciences and reading. This year, Romania also participates in the evaluation of other skills such as foreign language and digital skills.
What the questionnaire for parents and teachers contains
Also this year, both parents and teachers will have to respond to a questionnaire. The questions for parents aim to involve them in the education of the child, the emotional support they offer, the expectations they have on the educational evolution of the child. Parents will also be questioned regarding their involvement in school activities.
The questionnaire for science teachers and English collects information on socio-demographic data, qualifications, professional development, work experience, instructional practices and satisfaction with the workplace, additional to the specific questions of the basic and innovative areas.
Pisa test models
At the Testing Pisa in 2022, in mathematics, one of the problems was referring to a truck for moves. The children were offered its dimensions and the boxes that people who want to move. The students had to find out how many average boxes fit in the truck.
At the problem related to buying a car, students are given more information about the cost of a car, its maintenance and fuel. In the second question, using an integrated computer on the web page, students have to find out which of the four car options would be cheaper. Finally, they have to calculate an approximate resale price.
Romania, Codașa Europe to Education
According to the results of PISA 2022, the Romanian students are reading 45th in the world. The 1st place is occupied by Singapore, the second place by Ireland, the third place of Japan. In the fourth place is ranked South Korea.
In mathematics, we also ranked 45th, with only three places above Bulgaria. In science, our country also occupies a shameful place: we are in position 48 of 81 and the penultimate place in the EU. On the first place is Singapore, second place Japan, third place China and fourth Taiwan. As for functional illiteracy, the percentage in Romania is 42%.
In 2018, 41% of Romanian students were functionally illiterate in reading/reading. Functional illiteracy is defined by the fact that a student reading a text cannot explain and does not understand what it is about in that text. In mathematics there were several students who did not even deal with basic arithmetic operations, 47%. For example, they did not do well to convert prices from lei to currency. The sciences marked an increase to 44% of the proportion of those who could not draw conclusions based on simple investigations.
