UPDATE “The sinister tradition of Soviet gulags continues. Alexei Navalny was a symbol of resistance and a strong voice for freedom and democracy. I am convinced that his sacrifice was not in vain. My thoughts go out to his family, to Alexei's wife and children, whom I met a few months ago, but also to all his supporters.” wrote Mircea Geoană, deputy secretary of NATO, on Facebook.
UPDATE A message was also sent on the X platform by Klaus Iohannis, the president of Romania: “I am deeply saddened by the news that Aleksei Navalnyi has passed away. Our thoughts of sympathy go out to his family and friends. Today, the international community has lost a brave fighter for freedom and rights. We ask Russia to conduct a transparent and comprehensive investigation.”
UPDATE The Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Luminiţa Odobescu, emphasized, on Friday, that Aleksei Navalnîi will remain a symbol of the fight for freedom and democracy.

The president of USR, Cătălin Drula, stated on Friday that the death of the Russian oppositionist Aleksei Navalnî represents a “political assassination”, which must be an alarm signal for the free world.
“Aleksei Navalnyi paid the ultimate price for his courage to stand up to a ruthless dictator. This political assassination must be a wake-up call to the entire free world. Ukraine must be supported, more than ever, to defeat Putin's Russia. We must end this tyranny“, wrote Drula, on the X platform.
The Russian opponent was 47 years old
Alexei Navalny, the main opponent of the Putin regime, died on Friday, at the age of 47, in a prison colony in the Russian Arctic.
The Russian prison service reported that Aleksei Navalnyi died “after a walk”according to Sky News.
“On February 16, 2024, in prison colony no. 3, prisoner A. Navalnîi felt sick after a walk, losing consciousness almost immediately“, it is stated in a statement.
“The facility's medical workers arrived immediately and an emergency medical team was called. All necessary resuscitation measures were performed, but they did not give positive results. Emergency doctors confirmed the inmate's death“, concludes the statement.
