Project: Increase penalties for human trafficking and child pornography. Up to 20 years in prison

PNL deputy Cristian Băcanu announced that together with Florin Manole (PSD) he submitted a project to amend the Penal Code regarding the drastic increase in penalties for human trafficking and child pornography, “in the conditions in which the two scourges are still widespread” .

“Unfortunately, nowadays, human traffickers often get away with far too small sentences or even with suspension. It is outrageous and abnormal for a human trafficker to be convicted and the execution of the sentence to be suspended“, claims deputy Cristian Băcanu.

“Therefore, according to the proposal to amend the legislation, we want to increase the penalties as follows: for slavery, the limits increase from 3-10 years to 5-12 years; for human trafficking, the limits increase from 3-10 years to 5-12 years; for human trafficking committed by a public official, the limits increase from 5-12 years to 7-15 years; for trafficking of minors, the limits increase from 5-10 years to 7-15 years; for aggravated trafficking of minors, the limits increase from 7-12 years to 10-20 years; for the production of child pornography, the limits increase from 1-5 years to 3-10 years“, the parliamentarian also points out

Traffickers should be afraid of the rigors of the law

At the same time, we proposed increasing the penalties for other acts associated with child pornography. What do I want? I want us to discourage all those who feel they can take advantage of the vulnerable, buy and sell people as if they were commodities, and get rich off the suffering of others. I want traffickers to be afraid of the rigor of the law and the consequences they face when they decide to break it. Ultimately, as a politician, I want to give prosecutors and police the necessary means to fight human trafficking and organized crime,” Cristian Bacanu points out.

On the other hand, it must be said that it is imperative to effectively combat child pornography, a global billion-dollar industry that has developed greatly through the use of new technologies and chat applications. This problem is more current and more present, because the development of the Internet has produced new possibilities for the exploitation of children. In my opinion, we need to adopt a tougher criminal policy on child pornography. It must be said that the proposal to amend the Criminal Code was made in the context of the establishment of the special commission to combat human trafficking, at the end of last year“, concluded the deputy.
