Several pensioners who worked in the mines of Valea Jiului gathered on Monday, September 2, in Petroșani to start the steps to form an association, with legal status, to represent them in court. People want to challenge the decisions received to recalculate pensions, being upset that they have been substantially reduced.
“There are still 100 out. The whole Valley! We have no political involvement. We are not interested in politics. We care about our work.“, the pensioners stated to Antena 3. They are ready to sue the Government: “He cut off our rights.”
“I say they equalized pensions. I have a colleague with 20 years of underground and I have 28 years of underground. He gets the same pension as me. What tie did they make?“, also specified a pensioner dissatisfied with the recalculation.
Shortly after they came into possession of the decisions, many pensioners showed up at the country’s retirement homes, being dissatisfied with the information found in the documents.
Outraged by the recalculation decisions they received, several former miners decided to go out in the evening of Monday, August 26, on the streets of Petroșani, with their cars, to protest. Although they expected an increase in pensions, they found that the amount actually decreased.
The Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), the political formation led by George Simion, sent on Monday, September 2, that it notified the People’s Advocate about the injustices caused by Law 360/2023 on the public pension system. They claim that pensions have been cut for about a million pensioners, especially for those who worked in particularly dangerous conditions or for people with disabilities.
