“A child is not a miniature adult. The fever in the young child does not treat himself as an acute febrile disease,” emphasizes Dr. Mihai Craiu on Facebook.
He explains that the age of the child is the most important factor in fever assessment. There are different medical protocols for newborns, infants under 28 days, children between 1 and 3 months, and so on.
The doctor also warns that the fever should be measured correctly, with an adequate – rectal, auricular thermometer, etc. The thermometer with the thermometer or the leading strips that change their color are not recommended.
Febrile seizures generally occur in children between 6 months and 6 years. If a baby of only a few weeks has seizures, the cause can be serious – like meningitis.
Moreover, fever without obvious cause (without cough, diarrhea or other clear symptoms) requires mandatory clinical consultation, says Dr. Craiu.
The fever accompanied by rashes, extreme drowsiness or coma is a major medical emergency that should not be overlooked.
Dr. Craiu also warns that the advice received online or by phone (without a specialized consultation) can be dangerous, as the clinical shades can be easily overlooked by parents.
“Small child with high fever = medical consultation and administration of antitermic as quickly as possible”, The specialist concludes.
