Three Romanians remain on the main draw at the Madrid Open. Ana Bogdan defeated in the first round

The Romanian tennis player Irina Begu debuted with a victory at the WTA 1,000 tournament in Madrid, endowed with total prizes of 7,679,965 euros, while Jaqueline Cristian managed to reach the main draw.

Begu (33 years, 128 WTA) defeated the Czech Linda Fruhvirtova (18 years, 146 WTA) in the first round with 6-4, 7-6 (7/0), after two hours and 2 minutes of play, taking advantage and the 6 double faults of the opponent. The Romanian was led in the first set 3-1, but came back, equalized (3-3) and managed to win 6-4. In the second act, Begu led 4-0, was tied (4-4), made a new break and served for the match at 5-4, Fruhvirtova won two sets, but Irina sent the game to a tiebreak, where he won to zero (7-0).

Begu, who had defeated Linda Fruhvirtova in Cairo in 2020, 7-5, 6-0, in the round of 16 in Cairo, secured a check for 30,255 euros and 35 WTA points.

In the second round, Irina Begu will face the American Madison Keys (29 years old, 20 WTA), victorious in their only confrontation, 6-3, 6-1, in 2016, in the round of 16 in Miami.

Jaqueline Cristian is also moving on

Jaqueline Cristian (25 years old, 73 WTA) defeated Australian Daria Saville (30 years old, 96 WTA) in the last round of the qualifications, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, after two hours and 31 minutes. Ana Bogdan missed a match point and lost in the end

Ana Bogdan (31 years old, 64 WTA), who finished with 7 aces and 8 double faults, bowed out after three hours and 21 minutes of play.

Wang (23 years old, 25 WTA) won her third direct duel with the Romanian, after 6-1, 7-5 in the first round in Valencia, in 2022, and 7-6 (7/2), 7-6 (12/10), in the same year, in the eighth in Budapest.

In the first set, Ana Bogdan was led 5-1, but managed to come back and equalize, 5-5, taking the set to the tiebreak, where she had a new comeback, from 2-5 to 7 -5. Ana Bogdan also came back in the second set, from 1-3 to 4-3, missed a match point at 5-4, but eventually lost the set in the tiebreak, and in the decider she was dominated by Wang, who led 4-0 and prevailed 6-2.

Wang will play in the second round against Poland's Iga Swaitek, the world leader.

Romania now has three players on the main draw, the other player being Sorana Cîrstea, who will play directly in the second round with Filipina Alexandra Eala.
