Former president Traian Băsescu believes that Nicușor Dan will carry out his mandate to the end and rejects the scenario of a suspension from office. Băsescu stated that a possible referendum for the dismissal of the head of state would have no chance of success and claimed that Nicușor Dan is not overcome by the political situation, but has a different style from the one expected by Romanians.
The former head of state categorized as exaggerated the discussions regarding the president’s suspension and declared that the electorate would not support a possible dismissal.
“I think the stupidity with the suspension is an exaggeration. The referendum does not pass. If the suspension is done, the impeachment referendum follows. I don’t think the impeachment passes,” said Traian Băsescu, guest on Sunday evening at Digi24.
Asked if Nicușor Dan sometimes seems overwhelmed by the situation, the former president rejected this idea and explained that the difference is related to the pace at which the current head of state makes decisions.
“No! I think he has a style that doesn’t fit with the rest of us. He has a people that doesn’t fit with us. We want faster, he wants slower.” Basescu said.
Criticism of political negotiations
Traian Băsescu also criticized the way in which Nicușor Dan manages the negotiations for the formation of a government majority, claiming that there “constitutional ambiguities” in the president’s speech.
The former leader from Cotroceni referred to the statements of Nicușor Dan regarding the refusal to validate a government in which the AUR would be a part, appreciating that they are in contradiction with the negotiations conducted by his representatives with the formation.
“The President comes and says: “I will not validate a government in which there is GOLD”. What do you mean? That if the Parliament votes for the Government, you refuse to sign the decrees? I doubt it”, Basescu said.
He claimed that a similar situation is also found in the case of PSD.
“He says he doesn’t want a government with AUR, but he’s sending people to negotiate. PSD doesn’t want it with AUR either, but he’s sending people to negotiate.” the former president added.
Allegations about triggering the political crisis
In the opinion of Traian Băsescu, the current political crisis was caused by the tensions within the governing coalition. The former head of state claimed that PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu “wanted the head” of Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan and reproached the president for not intervening to avoid the escalation of the conflict.
“The president did nothing to prevent the outbreak of the crisis”, Basescu declared.
At the same time, he appreciated that both Nicușor Dan and Sorin Grindeanu misjudged the PNL’s reaction during the negotiations.
“They misjudged the PNL reaction, which, to be honest, was a good one,” concluded the former president.
Grindeanu explains why PSD voted for the motion alongside AUR
The president of the PSD, Sorin Grindeanu, recently stated that the social democrats considered the dismissal of the Government led by Ilie Bolojan from the moment they came to the conclusion that the Executive “is leading Romania in the wrong direction”. According to the PSD leader, a party has an obligation to try to change a government that adopts wrong decisions, “not to sit like a fool in that coalition.”
“We voted on that motion together with those from AUR and the other group that joined. Surveys showed that over 80% of Romanians believe that things are going in the wrong direction. And then I made this good decision for Romania. Things stopped halfway: we have a government dismissed with a record number of votes, 281, and we don’t have a government. I hope that in the coming weeks a stable solution will be found for the appointment of a government, because, in the future, Bolojan is there, USR is there”said the PSD leader.
