The two victims were known in the online environment, being influencers. They post pictures and live streams on their social networks, about their lives and the events they participate in. The girls were fasting even on the day of the accident, they refused the life jacket so as not to spoil the outfits they had.
According to Brazilian police, the incident took place on September 29, when the boat, with six people on board, was hit by a strong wave off the Brazilian coast, in a dangerous area called “Devil’s Neck”. The boat had a maximum capacity of five people and the captain, one of the five survivors, said he warned the group that he was over the limit of the boat, according to the Daily Mail. But the influencers pressured him to agree to go all up. The man also stated that he tried desperately to save those on board, but failed.
According to São Vicente Police Commissioner Marcos Alexandre Alfino, the two victims who died refused to wear the life jackets on board. “Some of them didn’t want to wear them because they were taking selfies and said they were preventing them from getting a tan”the commissioner explained.
Beatriz’s body was found first, floating out to sea and recovered by the Brazilian Marine Firefighters. A week later, authorities also found his body on Itaquitanduva beach.
Police are investigating to determine if the death of the two influencers was an accident or if it could have been prevented.
“All these details are carefully analyzed to determine whether the deaths were caused by recklessness or negligence,” Commissioner Alfino stated.
Local media named the survivors as Vanessa Audrey da Silva, Camila Alves de Carvalho, Daniel Goncalves Ferreira, Gabriela Santos Lima and Natan Cardoso Soares da Silva. Vanessa later recounted that she and the group of friends and influencers met up to party on a luxury yacht and spent the day out on the water and drinking alcohol. They later split into two groups to return to shore, but one of the groups was hit by a wave on the way back.
