Freddie Mercury’s secret daughter, known as ‘Bibi’, has died aged 48 after a long battle with a rare cancer. Her existence was revealed last year in the biography Love, Freddie, which reveals the Queen frontman kept it a secret all his life.
“She died peacefully after a long battle with chordoma, a rare type of cancer, leaving behind two children aged 9 and 7. Her ashes were scattered in the wind over the Alps,” said sher husband, Thomas, to the Daily Mail.
Lesley-Ann Jones recounted that Freddie Mercury called her ‘Biband”. She confirmed that several Queen songs, including “jewel” and “Don’t Try So Hard”were dedicated to the singer’s daughter.
“I am devastated by the loss of this woman who became my close friend, who came to me with a selfless purpose: to dismantle all the false stories that have circulated about Freddie for 32 years, to challenge the lies and reinterpretations of his life, and to tell the truth.” stated the author.
Bibi was the result of Freddie Mercury’s secret relationship with a married girlfriend. The singer gave her 17 volumes of diaries before his death in 1991 from AIDS-related bronchial pneumonia.
Its existence was denied by the singer’s ex-girlfriend Mary Austin, who stated in 2022 that it would be “amazed” if Freddie had a daughter.
“Her cancer first came when she was very young. It’s the real reason the family moved so often, so she could get the best treatment available at the time for chordoma, a rare type of spinal cancer that was fatal anyway. She went into remission for several years until the disease came back. That’s when she decided to contact me. She had read my 2021 book about Freddie,
Bibi wanted to keep her identity a secret to protect her career as a doctor.
“I didn’t want to share my father with the world. After his death, I had to learn to live with the attacks on him, the misinterpretations and the feeling that my father now belonged to everyone. I cried and mourned for my father, while fans around the world mourned Freddie. When you’re 15, it’s not easy. I had to grow up without him and live the important moments without his support. For 30 years I had to building my life and family without him and accepting that he won’t be there to share the happy moments with us. While the rest of the world was reinterpreting Mercury’s life and all that was, I needed my father just for me and my family.” Bibi stated.
The family is now considering releasing some photos of her, including some with Freddie, when she was younger.
