Those who wanted to grab the best spot at the beach during the night in Manduria, Italy, had an unpleasant surprise. An operation started at 6:00 a.m. targeted umbrellas and sunbeds left unattended by those trying to secure a prime spot on the beach.
The action took place on Sunday morning on the beaches of Manduria, in the province of Taranto, where the authorities intervened to put an end to a practice that sparked discontent among locals and tourists. Some people left umbrellas, sunbeds and other items on the beach overnight to “book” ahead of time a place for the next day, according to ilmessaggero.
Razie in the early hours of the morning
Municipal personnel and vehicles, under the supervision of the Local Police, began the operation at dawn. Crews checked the busiest beaches and picked up equipment left unattended.
The umbrellas and sunbeds were loaded into trucks and transported to a municipal warehouse. The authorities claim that objects left on the beach cannot be used to pre-empt places on the public domain.
The operation was personally supervised by the mayor of Manduria, Domenico Sammarco, who participated in the action to remove the equipment used for what the authorities consider a form of abusive occupation of public beaches.
“Public beaches must remain free, accessible and usable by all, without preventive occupations”, said the mayor.
Owners can retrieve their items, but risk fines
People who recognize their umbrellas or sunbeds taken by the authorities can request their recovery. However, the return of the equipment does not mean that the owners escape the sanctions.
Those who violated the ordinances and regulations regarding the use of the beaches risk fines of up to approximately 500 euros.
Local authorities are thus sending a clear message to those who try to “reserve” places on public beaches by leaving personal items overnight: this practice is not accepted.
The checks will not stop at this morning’s operation. The authorities have announced that they will continue checks along the coast, especially in areas where the phenomenon is more frequent.
The aim of the actions is to guarantee free access to public beaches and to prevent the abusive occupation of the best places.
