What is the relationship of young people with money: pilot program of financial education in high schools

The National Federation of Parents FNaP ProEdu together with ING Bank initiated a pilot project in high schools with the support of the Banometer program, based on volunteers who will facilitate educational dialogues with young people, about their relationship with money, even at their high school.

High school students learn from specialists what the relationship with money should be

The program was launched on November 11 and is a pilot project coordinated by the FNaP ProEdu Parents’ Federation for 10th grade students from six high schools in one sector of Bucharest and four high schools in Ploiești. The high schools in Bucharest are: “Ion Neculce” National College, “George Coșbuc” Bilingual National College, “Decebal” Theoretical High School, “Mihai Eminescu” National College, “Gheorghe Lazăr” National College and “Marin Preda” Theoretical High School, and those from Ploiesti are: “Toma Socolescu” Technological High School, “Mihai Viteazul” National College, “Ion Luca” National College Caragiale” and the “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” National College.

“In Romania, unfortunately, the discussion about financial health and how we can manage our money is not addressed enough. However, being such an important topic in our lives, we believe that more needs to be invested to bring this discussion earlier and more widely into our children’s lives. Considering that most of the ING colleagues who volunteer in this project are parents, the discussion is first and foremost a very genuine one. We are confident that this program will have an impact on the way young people manage and plan their money”, details Maria Cristina Matei, Operations Director of ING Bank Romania.

On behalf of the Parents’ Federation and the partner ING Bank Romania, I would like to thank them for their openness and support to the Bucharest and Prahova School Inspectorates, as well as the principals and teachers of the ten high schools enrolled in the pilot project. I am convinced that the students will appreciate and apply in their daily lives what they will learn, which will be a great gain for everyone, anytime from now on.”added Eugen Ilea, president of the National Federation of Parents FNaP ProEdu.

Contest with cash prizes

The course includes one hour of teaching by a financial instructor (volunteer specialist, with experience and training as a trainer) from ING Bank Romania. Each participating student will receive a booklet with financial basics to help consolidate the knowledge gained during the course.

After the course, students can test their new financial knowledge by participating in the Banometrics Contest, where the coordinating teachers submit projects in an online platform and a dedicated section, built and managed by FNaP ProEdu.

During the contest, the creativity and involvement of each team member will be evaluated, along with other criteria, all detailed in the contest regulations, and the students will have access to prizes totaling 8,500 euros. Moreover, the high school where the winning team studies will receive from the organizers a donation worth almost 6000 Euros, consisting of books and/or materials necessary to endow the high school library.
