To avoid a trip to Europe costing you thousands of euros more than you expected, it is recommended that you study a country’s traffic laws well in advance of your trip to make sure you follow the rules.
For example, in Germany, fines of 1,500 euros are applied to vehicles that do not have safety equipment. Any driver pulled over by law enforcement who is found without a reflective vest, reflective triangle and first aid kit will be fined.
In addition, it is mandatory to have safety equipment in Spain, where the fines are over 700 euros, and in France, where the fine is 200 euros.
France is also strict about satellite navigation system settings, especially for systems that indicate where radars are located.
If your vehicle is found to be equipped with a speed camera alert when driving in France, you could face a fine of up to €1,500.
To avoid unwanted expenses, it is recommended to check the satellite navigation settings and disable the alert function.
However, the biggest fine can be applied for aggressive driving.
In the UK, you can face a fine of over €1,100 for rude gestures or excessive use of the horn. However, Germany takes this much more seriously, with a range of fines depending on the seriousness of the offence.
Showing the middle finger to another driver can cost you over €4,000, while telling another road user they’re an “idiot” can cost you €700.
