Dănuț Pilă is the president of the Board of Directors of the “Saint Maria” Pediatric Hospital in Iași, medical unit where seven children have lost their lives due to nosocomial infections.

His appointment in this position has aroused many questions, given that the pile has no medical training and is known especially for its political connections and the administrative functions it holds.

According to Antena 3, Dănuț Pilă is a close relative of the president of the Iași County Council, the liberal Costel Alexe. He was proposed for the position of president of CA by PNL Iași.

Asked what he recommends for this position, the pile replied: “As you know, the composition of the Board of Directors is legislated. I am a representative in CA, you know that they are representatives from the College of Physicians, DSP, are also representatives from the County Council and the president of the County Council …”, Dănuț Pilă said.

In addition to its role in the hospital, Dănuț Pilă is also director of the Regional Directorate of Roads and Bridges and a former employee of the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI), from where they benefit from a special pension of 56,500 lei annually, according to the 2024 wealth statement.

His name also appeared in a file of the National Anticorruption Directorate, which investigates the disappearance of a million euros destined to the repairs of a national road in Iași, a battery of witness.

Regarding the outbreak of nosocomial infection and children’s deaths, Pilă said:
“No, I was on leave, I was not announced by the hospital management of the existence of these problems.”

Dismissals after the tragedy at the Pediatric Hospital in Iasi

Following the tragedy, the hospital manager was dismissed, although he remained as a medical director, and the management of DSP Iași is accused of not intervening in time. Press sources reported that the head of DSP was not even present at the visit of the Minister of Health, and employees of the institution present on the spot avoided contact with the press.

The hospital received a fine of 50,000 lei for non -compliance with protocols for nosocomial infections, and the hospital epidemiologist and a doctor from ATI were sanctioned with 10,000 lei each.

Minister Alexandru Rogobete said that the report of the Control Body will be made public to ensure transparency and responsibility, without excluding new dismissals and sanctions. “The carelessness, indolence, disorder and administrative chaos will not be tolerated. Who does not do their job, leaves home – no matter who is put there!” emphasized the official.

In parallel, the Ministry of Health will implement concrete measures to prevent similar tragedies. The national program will be created, intended for the purchase of disinfectants, protective equipment, HEPA filters and consumables to reduce infections associated with medical assistance.

Legislative changes and compulsory training for all medical staff regarding the prevention of nosocomial infections will be made. The teams of the ATI sections will be extended with specialized personnel, including the possibility of including epidemiological doctors in the personnel norm, and the non -observance of the control and monitoring protocols of nosocomial infections will be sanctioned immediately and clearly.
