Video Sorin Grindeanu: “PSD had no understanding with Nicușor Dan”. Attack on Bolojan: “When I see how brilliant he is, I’m sure I’m nervous”

Sorin Grindeanu, PSD leader, explained on Wednesday evening how he sees the way out of the current political crisis in which Romania is. “Eventually, a solution will emerge,” says the president of the Chamber of Deputies.

The PSD leader declared, at Gândul, that the social democrats agreed with the idea of a “transitional government” to manage the next period and ensure the closure of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), but the proposal was not accepted by all political formations.

“Preliminaries were hardly discussed (not at the consultations at the Cotroceni Palace), so I can say that it was not a topic taken up at Cotroceni“, said Grindeanu.

Discussions about PNRR and party positions

According to the social-democratic leader, the main topics addressed during the meeting with the president concerned the reforms in PNRR and the possibility of a rapprochement between the parties that were part of the former coalition.

“The PNRR and the laws that the Government should send (…) to Parliament were discussed. Also, the president wanted to see if the positions of the parties that were part of the former coalition had become more flexible“, he explained.

Grindeanu emphasized that PSD, UDMR and the group of national minorities agreed on a temporary governing formula that would allow the current political deadlock to be overcome.

“We said yes, I said yes, we are willing to form that transitional, armistice government (…) that will ensure the crossing of this period in which the PNRR must be closed, until after the budget, in the late autumn of thisn”, said the PSD leader.

According to him, the purpose of such a formula would have been to calm political tensions and reassess the situation after the completion of the main government objectives.

Grindeanu: “PNL and USR said no”

Asked who opposed this option, the PSD leader pointed directly to the two parties.

“We agreed, the UDMR yes, the minorities yes (…) But the others, that is PNL and USR, said no, that they don’t want something like that”, said Grindeanu.

“PSD did not have any kind of understanding with Nicușor Dan”

Sorin Grindeanu also rejected the speculations regarding the existence of agreements between the PSD and the president Nicușor Dan.

“I didn’t have any kind of understanding and the PSD didn’t have any kind of understanding with Nicușor Dan. That’s briefly what I can tell you“, he declared.

The social-democratic leader emphasized that the PSD publicly announced, since the end of last year, its intention to reevaluate its participation in the government.

“The PSD made the decisions as we publicly announced a long time ago (…) At the beginning of December (…) we publicly announced that we are entering a period of evaluation of our participation in government”said the leader of the social democrats.

Grindeanu also criticized the activity of the Executive, claiming that “Romania is badly governed” and that the current leadership formula has not provided effective solutions to the country’s problems.

Grindeanu attacks the Bolojan Government: “The economy is on the fence”

The PSD leader launched new criticisms of the Government and Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, claiming that the current economic situation is worse than during the financial crisis of 2009-2010.

Grindeanu rejected the accusations that PSD and AUR are responsible for the lack of an executive with full powers.

“And then the only public policy is swearing at the PSD, that this is what is done“, said the president of the social democrats.

“We entered the excessive deficit procedure when there was a PNL prime minister”

Grindeanu claimed that the responsibility for the current economic problems cannot be attributed exclusively to the PSD and recalled that Romania entered the excessive deficit procedure during the period when the Government was headed by a liberal prime minister.

“In the last seven years, the PNL had four prime ministers, the PSD only one. We entered the excessive deficit procedure when there was a PN prime ministerL”, declared the PSD leader.

He also criticized the economic measures adopted in recent years, which he categorized as right “a bad austerity policy”.

“Patronages say the economy is on the fence”

Grindeanu cited the recent discussions he had with the representatives of unions and the business environment, claiming that the signals received are extremely worrying.

“I had a meeting with the employers today. You know what I’m saying? That the economy is on the fence. That’s what the employers said at the meeting today, that money isn’t moving, it doesn’t exist at the moment and that investment and consumption have collapsed“, said Grindeanu.

The PSD leader claims that the current economic situation is comparable or even more difficult than the one Romania went through during the economic crisis over a decade ago:

“We are somewhere worse than in those 2009-2010 crisis years.”

Direct attack on Ilie Bolojan

Sorin Grindeanu also criticized the public image of Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, who he says is exaggeratedly presented as a successful reformer.

“When I see (…) how Bolojan is brilliant and has made reforms, I’m sure I’m nervous. Because Romanians feel that they’re doing it and they see that every day they’re doing it worse than the day before“, said the PSD leader.

In his opinion, the deterioration of living standards is the direct consequence of the current government.

“This is the result of this government of Ilie Bolojan“, concluded Sorin Grindeanu.

Grindeanu: “Today there are no 233 votes”. The PSD leader says that the political solution must lead to the departure of Ilie Bolojan

The PSD leader explained that at the moment there is no parliamentary majority capable of supporting the inauguration of a new government, which is why the current political deadlock continues.

Asked if, in his opinion, President Nicușor Dan is interested in extending the blockade, Grindeanu answered:

”I don’t think so. Quite the opposite. As far as I can tell…”

Asked about the possibility of a new nomination for the position of prime minister and the role of the president in unblocking the situation, the social-democratic leader stated that the head of state is trying to identify a candidate who can obtain the necessary support in Parliament.

An IRES survey commissioned by the PSD places the party with a 4% lead over the PNL. Siegfried Muresan: “We are not being fooled”

“Right now, he wants a nomination that shows he is able to have a majority in Parliamentt”, said Grindeanu, emphasizing that parliamentary arithmetic makes it extremely difficult to form a majority.

“Eventually, a solution will emerge”

Grindeanu says he still hopes for a negotiated political solution, to which PSD, UDMR and the minority group are willing to contribute.

“I hoped, together with Kelemen Hunor and Varujan Pambuccian, that the world would lower the tone. We did, and the UDMR, and the minorities”said the PSD leader.

“Eventually, a solution will emerge“, added Grindeanu, without advancing a concrete term.

“A solution that would really remove Ilie Bolojan from the government”

In the opinion of the social-democratic leader, the future political formula must aim to replace the current executive.

“It is necessary for Romania to have a solution that really removes Ilie Boloja from the governmentn”, said the PSD president.

Grindeanu rejected the accusations that the social democrats would block the negotiations and claimed that the PSD has shown flexibility in the discussions held so far.

President Nicușor Dan wants the end of the political crisis by the end of the summer

We remind you that President Nicușor Dan declared on Wednesday, in Kiev, that he hopes that the current political crisis will be overcome during this summer, stressing, however, that unblocking the situation depends primarily on the political parties.

The head of state stated that Romanians want stability and showed that there is a growing expectation that the period of uncertainty will end.

“We need to end this crisis as soon as possible, but the answer is not with me, it is with the parties”said Nicușor Dan, adding that he hopes the situation will be closed “during this summer”.

Asked about the political consultations, the president stated that the dialogue with the party leaders has not stopped, even if there are no official meetings at the moment.

“I discuss with the parties and the parties among themselvesm”, stated the head of state, noting that he does not consider formal consultations necessary, as long as there is communication between political actors.

At the same time, Nicușor Dan suggested that the positions taken in recent months have significantly narrowed the space for negotiation between the parties.

“The rhetoric in which the parties have been sitting for months greatly narrows their space for negotiation”the president said.

Siegfried Muresan disputes the results

PNL MEP Siegfried Mureșan criticized the sociological research, claiming that PSD published polls in the past that did not reflect the actual results of the elections.

“I only remember the survey commissioned by the PSD and published last year, two days before the elections for the Bucharest City Hall, in which the PSD candidate, Daniel Băluță, was declared the winner, with 27%, while the PNL candidate and future mayor, Ciprian Ciucu, had 24%. Two days later, Ciprian Ciucu won the elections with 36.16%, while Daniel Băluță gathered 20.2% of the votes, getting only 3rd place”, the liberal MEP also stated.
