After visiting the village that offers more than 27,000 euros to new residents, vlogger Ben Morris sounds the alarm: the money comes with a ten-year contractual “trap” and massive investments.
Ben Morris set off to the Swiss Alps to investigate a location that was suffering from a dwindling population, and in an attempt to increase its numbers, he offered a financial incentive to those who took up residence in the village.
Nestled in southwestern Switzerland in the canton of Valais, the idyllic village of Albinen looks like something out of a postcard, with its stunning mountain views, rolling hills and charming houses set against a lush green backdrop. With a reported population of just 262 people, the residents of Albinen have voted to implement a residency initiative that offers 25,000 Swiss francs (about £24,000 at the time of writing) to those who move to the mountain, according to the BBC .
Ben was clearly impressed as he drove towards the village, calling the views “trust“, writes Express.
Upon arrival, he found the village to be an oasis of peace, but as he explored the narrow streets and enjoyed the views again, he was amazed.
In the video posted on his eponymous YouTube channel, he said: “Actually, I had no intention of coming to this city. I felt so tired and miserable this morning. But just the fact that I can sit here right now and admire this view. Worth it in itself.“
It seemed puzzling that such a beautiful place should offer financial incentives, but he later pointed out the problem: moving to Albinen comes with a strict set of conditions that must be met.
“I know what you all are thinking. This village looks amazing. How do you sign up to get the money? Unfortunately, there are some requirements. That makes it a little less attractive.“
In the video posted on YouTube, Ben continued: “Here are the requirements to move to Albinen and receive the money. It’s 25,000 Swiss francs, which is actually a lot more than $25,000.”
“You must purchase, build or substantially renovate a main residence in Albinen with a minimum value of 200,000 Swiss francs. This home must be your primary residence. It can’t be a vacation home.”
“You must commit to living in the village for at least 10 years. This is probably going to disappoint most of you watching. You must either be a Swiss citizen or hold a Swiss Type C permanent residence permit.”
Seemingly disappointed, Ben added that once you learn these details, you realize it’s “not as attractive” as it first appeared. According to House Beautiful, you’ll need to be under 45.
It added that these rules, as stated in the Housing Regulations 2023, are intended to “promote retention and permanent residence of young people and families in the municipality of Albinen”.
