The president of the PSD, Sorin Grindeanu, states that it would have been “simpler” for the social democrats to remain in the opposition, but they preferred to enter the government. “This does not mean that the decisions from the coalition, from the Government, of which the PSD is also a part, were always the best”, he says. “If we continue only for the sake of a stability that can be restored in a very short period of time, you might cause much more damage to the whole context”, argues the PSD leader.
The leader of the PSD, Sorin Grindeanu, stated, in an interview broadcast on Thursday evening, by Antena 3, that he discussed with the European socialists and “not with the others” about how the governing coalition in Romania works, he explained that “it’s not necessarily the political business of others”.
He said that “not the case with PSD” not to maintain the pro-European line, Grindeanu reaffirming that PSD will not form an alliance with AUR.
“We will not form an alliance with parties that are not pro-European. Yes. And PSD does not support a minority government. This does not mean that there are no majorities in the Romanian Parliament and without PSD. We do not do with GOLD. Others can. What do you hear from me and PSD: we will not make this majority with extremist parties”said Grindeanu.
He also accused that between the PNL and the AUR there were recent “margins” and a refusal of the liberals to deny a future alliance with the formation led by George Simion: “They were, like that. It was more, the refusal to deny a future alliance between PNL and AUR, something like that.”
Grindeanu explained that the PSD started an internal process of evaluating the coalition and the governing act, in order to check the performance of the ministers and the policies implemented in the last 10 months. This process will be completed on April 20 with a vote and will be followed by regional meetings with mayors and county councils.
“It starts with self-assessment and extends to the whole coalition, the whole act of government. We will debate the good and the bad things that have happened in the last 10 months, so that when the vote comes on April 20, people are informed and make an informed decision.”the PSD leader explained.
He emphasized that the objective is not to change the prime minister, but to make the Government more efficient: “The stake is for the Government to function better. We will decide for the PSD and we will convey to the others what our decision is.”
Grindeanu stated that, although stability is important, sometimes difficult decisions are needed to correct some problems in the coalition.
“If you see and come to the conclusion that things are not going in the right direction, I think it’s your duty to try to change them, to make them work better. Governments still fall. Things still happen in Europe. It’s important that everything is within the constitutional limits and that a pro-European line is maintained”, said the PSD leader.
