The last weeks bring to the fore not only the scenario of the breakup of the governing coalition, but also the opposition party AUR, which seems to be a “desired tool” of the Power formations, according to political consultant Adrian Zăbava. In practice, however, the strategist notes that such a strategy has taken a different turn.
The political discourse of the last few weeks brings accusations and states the scenarios of some collaborations of the opposition party AUR, either with the PSD or with the PNL. The PSD-AUR collaboration scenario is confirmed by the voice of the leader of the AUR senators: “I told them: we are not arrogant and we can give up some amendments, but you also accept some of our proposals”indicated Petrișor Peiu, at the time of the scandal regarding the adoption of the state budget. However, the Social Democrats found themselves without a supporting vote from AUR members when it came to the package of social measures.
On the other hand, the liberals do not deny the possibility of cooperating with AUR. The leader of the PNL senators, Daniel Fenechiu, states that the PNL can “the parliamentarian collaborates with any political party, including AUR”in the event of a government crisis.
In parallel, AUR denies the possibility of collaborations with the two formations.
“Not only and maybe, there was a dialogue between PSD and AUR and a PSD plan, where AUR had a role in terms of the budget” – Adrian Zăbava, political consultant
Political consultant Adrian Zăbava claims that the assumed partnership between PSD and AUR on the topic of budget amendments suggests a potential opening to future collaboration. However, the scenarios enunciated in the public space also have another purpose.
“What happened recently shows us that there is a possibility in this sense. I think that the two situations must be looked at and analyzed separately. I am referring to PSD collaboration, to the information that PSD would collaborate with AUR or that PNL would collaborate with AUR. Without just and maybe, there was a dialogue between PSD and AUR and a PSD plan, where AUR had a role in terms of the budget. No one can deny this”. explains political consultant Adrian Zăbava.
PSD, on the defensive
Adrian Zăbău observes that the social democrats have gone on the defensive, adopting a strategy by which they try to suggest that, in fact, the PNL is the group that collaborates with the AUR.
“Because of the bad result for PSD and its budget strategy, PSD is now on the defensive because it was exposed on the sidelines of this collaboration with AUR. It was left outside by AUR, but it was clear to everyone that PSD is willing to turn to AUR for its own benefit, so to speak. Consequently, this just shows that maybe PSD is open, depending on the situation, to collaborate with AUR. Whether it will happen further or not, that is not we can predict, but clearly there is this opening.
On the other hand, the accusation that the PNL could join hands with the AUR for different objectives comes from the PSD. And in my opinion, it’s mainly a fallback strategy on their part more than an accusation with any basis in reality. The PSD was, I repeat, exposed by what happened on the budget and at the moment it is trying a defensive strategy in which it also throws this anathema of collaboration with the AUR at the PNL. Their collaboration with AUR was obvious”.
A desired instrument
The PSD postpones a decision on remaining in government until after April 20, during which the dialogue in the coalition remains blocked. Meanwhile, the PNL and the USR have adopted a trenchant position, excluding the continuation of the partnership with the social democrats under the leadership of another prime minister. “Perhaps from here, some of the PNL hint that there could also be support from the AUR for a minority government, that is to say that there would be life even after the PSD, for a government in which the PNL and the USR are a part”. indicates Adrian Zăbău.
The political consultant concludes that, after the experience of the budget vote, AUR seems to be a desired instrument rather than one controlled by the PSD. In his opinion, in this recent context, it was the AUR that benefited from the Social Democrats, and not the other way around.
AUR is the second largest party in the Parliament, having both MEPs and local elected representatives. At the same time, it is ranked first in polls in terms of voting intention.
