Approximately 2,000 blocks in sectors 1, 5 and 6 of the Capital remained without hot water following the fire that broke out on Monday evening at CET Vest, which means that tens of thousands of residents are affected. The fire involved three electrical transformers and prompted the emergency intervention of dozens of firefighters and specialized crews.

The fire involved three electrical transformers within the plant premises, two of them operating with cooling oil, and led to the large-scale intervention of the fire brigade. 16 emergency vehicles, including water tankers and powder extinguishing equipment, responded to the scene and the flames were extinguished after midnight.

According to the Bucharest-Ilfov Emergency Situations Inspectorate, no casualties were recorded, but the affected installations required complex cooling and security works, operations continuing on Tuesday morning.

The electricity supply was not affected in the long term, but the heating system was severely disrupted. More than 2,000 blocks in sectors 1, 5 and 6 remained without hot water, with a major impact in the Militari and Drumul Taberei neighborhoods.

“The fire has been extinguished, and at this moment the assessment of the affected installations is being carried out and the establishment of the necessary interventions to resume the activity under safe conditions. ELCEN is currently analyzing which installations can be restarted and in which configuration the supply of hot water can still be ensured”, said the Minister of Energy, Bogdan Ivan.

The minister added that the damage is significant and that the complete resumption of the operation of the installations could require a long period, being analyzed temporary solutions to ensure the supply of the heating agent in the cold season.
