“Killer stupidity”. Cristian Tudor Popescu’s reaction after the death of a 15-year-old student from Bacău. Investigations into the ambulance system

The tragedy that happened in a locality located approximately 20 kilometers from Bacău, where a 15-year-old student died after collapsing in the school yard, triggered harsh reactions in the public space. One of these belongs to the journalist Cristian Tudor Popescu, who criticized in harsh terms the way in which the intervention of the emergency services was managed.

In a harsh reaction, the journalist Cristian Tudor Popescu categorized the management of the intervention as right “murderous nonsense”.

“Robert, a 15-year-old boy, died within days in a school located 20 km from Bacău. Requested to intervene urgently, the Bacău Ambulance arrived after 30 minutes, without a doctor, without an ATI unit, only with a nurse concerned not to get dirty with vomit, who did nothing to help the boy. It took 2 hours until a full ambulance, with a doctor, arrived to apply resuscitation procedures to him to Robert. Too late”CTP wrote on Facebook.

He also criticized the explanations provided by the management of the Bacău Hospital, especially the argument regarding the choice of the ambulance “easier”:

“The individual made the first bewildering statement, saying that “he didn’t think the case was that serious”, according to which he sent the ambulance with an assistant. Then he escalated to a peak of the murderous stupidity of these lands: “This ambulance is lighter, so it arrived faster, the other one, being heavier, arrived later”. What the hell, says the boss, a BMW, which weighs 2 tons, is slower than my one-ton Sandica!”, added the journalist.

The CTP concluded that, in its opinion, this case will remain one of “murder”.

“The investigation will determine the responsibilities, but to me this case will remain as the killing by a self-indulgent brat of a child who was certainly smarter than him…”, continued CTP.

We remind you that the tragedy occurred in a locality approximately 20 kilometers from Bacău: a 15-year-old student died after collapsing in the school yard.

According to the information presented by the authorities, although the case was classified as a code red emergency, a type B crew was initially sent to the scene, with a medical assistant, given that a crew with a doctor would also have been available at the station.

Later, inconsistencies appeared between the statements of the management of the Bacău County Ambulance Service and those of the personnel involved in the coordination of the interventions, regarding the availability of resources and the criteria for sending crews.

Arafat says the dead boy at school could have been saved

The head of DSU, Raed Arafat, said that the tragedy could have been avoided if the people around the child had known how to apply first aid maneuvers, stressing the importance of quick and correct intervention, including techniques such as the Heimlich maneuver and basic resuscitation.

At the same time, the head of the DSU criticized the way the intervention was managed, stating that “the rules are clear” and that, in the event of a code red, a medical crew should have been dispatched, rejecting the argument that an ambulance with a paramedic would have arrived more quickly.

The coordinating doctor Sorin Gheorghe Enescu explained that he decided to send a type B crew because “the nature of the call was not that serious”although there was also a medical crew in the station.

Later, when additional support was requested, the only doctor available was already involved in another code red intervention, arriving too late.

Until his arrival, resuscitation maneuvers were performed by teaching staff and the medical assistant who arrived at the scene.

Following the tragedy, the Bacău Supreme Court launched internal checks, and the authorities opened a criminal case to determine whether the procedures were followed and whether the medical resources were correctly allocated.
