Astronauts aboard the International Space Station witnessed a spectacular phenomenon: an intense southern aurora that lit up Earth’s atmosphere with strong shades of green.
The images were made public by NASA astronaut Jessica Meir, aboard the SpaceX Dragon capsule.
In a message published on Facebook, Jessica Meir described the moment that stunned even astronauts, accustomed to unusual sights:
“A timelapse shot from our @spacex Dragon spacecraft capturing the spectacular aurora south featured in yesterday’s post, the result of a recent solar event. Unlike any auroras we’ve seen before, this one danced and slipped right below us, giving us an amazing show. I’m in awe of this ethereal and emotional phenomenon.”
The phenomenon was visible thanks to a recent solar event that sent charged particles into the Earth’s atmosphere, according to ProTV News.
Auroras form when solar particles interact with Earth’s magnetic field and atmospheric gases.
The green color, predominant in the captured images, appears as a result of the interaction with oxygen atoms located at low altitudes.
We remind you that on January 19, 2026, Romanians were treated to an amazing show of the aurora borealis.
