The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the Emergency Clinical Hospital for Children “Marie Curie” is operating at reduced capacity, after a lack of staff forced the management of the unit to temporarily close five beds intended for the most serious cases. Doctors warn that the situation endangers the lives of children who depend on complex treatments and permanent care.
Until recently, the ward had 27 beds, but the number was reduced to 22 after the departure of seven nurses. Two of these resigned, while others went on medical or parental leave.
Dr. Cătălin Cîrstoveanu, head of the ATI section, says that the activity of such a department depends on a permanent balance of human resources, according to TVR Info.
“We’re exhausted”
The doctor pointed out that in many situations a nurse has to deal exclusively with one patient, especially in extremely serious cases.
Some of the most vulnerable child patients in the Romanian medical system are treated in the department.
“This kid doesn’t have a lung and we’ve been keeping him on extracorporeal respiration for two weeks,” reported Dr. Cîrstoveanu, describing one of the cases under care.
Nurses say the pressure is huge:
“We’re exhausted. There should be a nurse on an intubated patient.”
Dozens of children are awaiting transfer
According to doctors, there are always at least ten newborns with severe conditions requiring intensive care on the waiting list.
More than half of the patients treated at “Marie Curie” come from other counties. For many families, delaying the transfer can have dramatic consequences.
The mother of a child born prematurely, transferred from Craiova after a heart complication, says that the medical intervention was postponed due to the lack of places.
“They transferred us from Craiova, but it was delayed due to the lack of seats and other complications arose“, says the woman.
Hiring, blocked by budget restrictions
The hospital’s management says it cannot hold competitions to fill vacancies due to restrictions imposed by an emergency ordinance passed in 2025, which limits hiring in the public sector.
In this context, doctors warn that the shortage of personnel directly affects the ability to treat children in critical condition.
Shortage of 30,000 medical personnel at national level
The problem is not an isolated one. According to the SANITAS Federation, the Romanian health system faces a deficit of approximately 30,000 medical personnel.
Amid the staffing crisis and discontent over the new pay law, the union has announced a warning strike in more than 500 hospitals across the country for Monday. A general strike could be called by the end of the month.
