The exploitation of gases from the Black Sea transforms Romania into a “relevant actor in providing energy security in the region and in the largest gas producer in the European Union”, interim prime minister Ilie Bolojan said on Tuesday, July 21, a day after OMV Petrom and Romgaz announced the completion of the installation of the “Neptun Alpha” offshore production platform.
“Yesterday, Romgaz and OMV Petrom completed the installation of the production platform for the exploitation of natural gas from the Black Sea, the largest natural gas project in Romania. The support structure of the platform was assembled and fixed to the seabed. It has a total height of more than 220 meters and a weight of more than 16,000 tons, having been transported and installed by special ships in recent months. The installation of the platform and the 160 km pipeline connecting to the shore are the essential stages of the project. The works will continue in the coming months, by making all the connections, and will be completed with the testing of the installations, so that gas exploitation will start from next year “, wrote Ilie Bolojan in a post on Facebook.
Located in the area with waters about 120 meters deep, the offshore production platform “Neptun Alpha” weighs 16,500 tons and has a total height of over 225 meters. Both the supporting structure (jacket) and the upper structure (topsides) were manufactured by Saipem, on its sites in Arbatax (Italy) and Karimun (Indonesia), respectively

The installation of the platform represents a major new achievement in the development of the Neptun Deep project and, says the interim prime minister, will have the effect of industrial revival.

The new quantities of gas will allow the industrial relaunch, the provision of fertilizers for agriculture from domestic production (the Azomureș plant), under good conditions for farmers, as well as the provision of the gas needed for residential consumption at a stable price in the years to come.
