Exclusively Muresan, after the US elections: “Trump’s agenda was electorally invalidated”. What Romania must do in the next two years

PNL MEP Siegfried Mureșan said on Wednesday, live on Digi24, that the result of the elections in the United States changes the way Romania and the European Union must manage the relationship with Washington. According to him, the political agenda of President Donald Trump was “electorally invalidated”, and Romania must strengthen its ties both with the American administration and with the representatives of the two parties in Congress. Muresan warned that the White House leader could become “even more unpredictable” in the next two years.

Siegfried Mureșan emphasized the importance of maintaining the transatlantic partnership, but also the need to expand the political dialogue with the representatives of the American Congress.

“First of all, the partnership with the United States is today as important as it has always been, both for Romania and for the European Union. We must continue to invest in the transatlantic relationship from the point of view of foreign policy, security, economic and commercial exchanges,” said the MEP.

Mureșan insisted that the relationship between Europe and the United States must remain based on common democratic values.

“We must build, invest in the transatlantic relationship based on the values that have made this relationship so volatile in the last 80 years. Let’s not forget human rights, democracy, freedom of the press, freedom of expression. These must be the basis of a solid transatlantic relationship,” he said.

Mureșan: President Trump’s agenda was electorally invalidated

Referring to the result of the American elections, the MEP claimed that the change in the majority in Congress represents a signal against the policies promoted by Donald Trump and that Romania must adapt to the new political configuration in Washington.

“But it is clear that after yesterday’s elections some things have changed. The president is the same, the majority in Congress is different. President Trump’s agenda, any objective analysis tells us that it was electorally invalidated. As such, we will have to work with the same president for the next 2 years. We will also have to work with the majority in the congress, which is different”, explained Mureșan.

He believes that the Romanian authorities must develop political relations with the representatives of both American parties and prepare for the next presidential elections.

“So it is clear that for Romania we will have to invest more in the transatlantic relationship, we will have to have more leaders, more political people who cultivate a bipartisan dialogue with the United States of America and we will have to prepare for the future, because in 2 years, the United States will elect another president”, added the MEP.

What Romania must do in the relationship with Washington

Asked how Romania should relate to the new political configuration in the United States, Mureșan emphasized that dialogue with the presidential administration is no longer enough.

“We will have to work more with the decision-makers in Congress. There will no longer be a single decision-maker. For the military presence, for the agreement, for the financial support for our region, including for Ukraine, the congress has an important role,” he declared.

Muresan insisted on the need for a broader political dialogue, which would include both the Trump administration and Republican and Democratic lawmakers.

“As such, we will have to continue to work with this administration, which is still 2 years into office, but we will also have to invest in good relations with Congress, with the two houses, with the House of Representatives and with the Senate, with lawmakers from both parties. We will have to invest more in the transatlantic relationship. We will have to have a broader dialogue, a single channel of communication, a single decision center, as it was until now, it will not be in the next 2 years.” the MEP explained.

Trump policy and tariff war warning

Regarding trade relations between the United States and Europe, Siegfried Muresan warned that Donald Trump could become even more unpredictable in the exercise of his duties after the election results.

“I think that President Trump will become, within the limits of the powers that he has, even more unpredictable to some extent. That’s why I think that dialogue with him and not unnecessarily provoking is a wise thing, it’s a thing that needs to be done,” he said.

“But we have to know that the agenda, a certain political agenda, was invalidated by the people of the United States, and we have to see that the war started in Iran, which led to an increase in oil prices and which, obviously, also led to an increase in isolationism, made international trade more difficult, produced negative effects,” Muresan said.

In this context, the MEP pleaded for the consolidation of economic and commercial exchanges.

“As such, we must invest in trade. The more trade exchanges, the more stability in the economic and commercial relationship between Romania and the United States, from Europe and the United States, the better,” he declared.

“Divisions, isolation, less trade, all these things lead to poverty. People in America felt these things first hand, and it was one of the main reasons why people in America voted like that yesterday,” concluded Siegfried Muresan.
